Social Issue 1: Homelessness
Homelessness is not only an issue in the United States but all across the globe. The issue is on the rise, and neither the United States nor any other developed countries has sought out this burning social problem with much success (Crary & Leff, 2014). The present article focuses on the issue of homelessness with respect to the factors responsible for such situations, the impact of homelessness on national economy and policy of a country and the possible abatement methods that can be implemented to overcome such situation through social work practices.
The article reviewed for discussion as mentioned in the flowing URL: (http://www.endhomelessness.org/page/-/files/State_of_Homelessness_2015_FINAL_online.pdf) indicates that homelessness is a global concern and the United States is one of the major countries affected by such issue. Homelessness in the United States has been attributed to cross border migration, human trafficking of child and women, people discarded by the society or runaway due to substance abuse and child abuse. Further the issue of homelessness is dependent on conflicts in the family, issues of veteran disrespect and people suffering from mental depression or schizophrenics who have either lost their memory or are unwilling to settle for a proper social habitation. Homelessness creates health deficiency in children and women, due to under-nutrition and malnutrition.

Such nutritional deficiencies and unhealthy habitation lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Further, it can create the platform for un-organized crimes for such individual’s self sustenance (Crary & Leff, 2014).
From the 1960s and 1970s, on the eve of social renaissance no structured effort has been implemented to combat this issue either on the political, economical or social ground. However, there are policies for homelessness in various constitutions across the world. The major issues that hinder homelessness are the improper utilization of funds, financial constraints on governments, lack of adequate teamwork between various partners including social workers, physicians, security personnel who could have addressed this issue.
The social work theory that underpins working with homeless individuals is the key factor that will address the issue of homelessness. First of all social workers should follow the principle of case work approach in understanding an individual’s need through a person centric approach. Person centric approach will help to reveal confidential information and factors that contributed to homelessness of the individual concerned. Further, I should lobby with various human rights association in protecting their interests and rehabilitation in the societal structure. I would also implement my leadership skills to co-ordinate the various services related with the solution of homelessness (Crary & Leff, 2014). For example, I would be instrumental in accessing health care help and legal help as per the situation demands.
Further, I would ensure that under no circumstances the self- respect and dignity of the individual receiving care should not be eroded. I would also abide by local legal and political policies that underpin social work with individuals who are homeless. Though last but not the least, I would ensure the safety of individual being served and my own self safety while providing care. For example, I should not use my private vehicle in transporting such individuals to access service needs and at all times I should keep my supervisor updated regarding my location and time of visit to such individuals. This will help in arranging optimal resources that will ensure health and safety of the actors involved in such process.
Social Issue 2: Social Inequality
Social inequality represents the discrimination concerning resource allocation in specific individuals or group of individuals based on caste, creed, religion, ethnicity and economy. Social inequality prevails all across the globe and the United States is no exception to it (Domhoff, 2013). The present article will focus upon reviewing a current literature on social inequality prevalent in the United States. Based upon the article, the present article will evaluate the factors which lead to social inequality and its impact on individuals affected by such discrimination. The article would further evaluate the social work practices that can alleviate such issues or control them significantly.
The article that was reviewed was based on the following reference written by Doob Christopher in 2013 (Doob, B. Christopher (2013). Social Inequality and Social Stratification in US Society (1st ed.). Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Pearson Education). The article portrays the purview of social inequality as the improper distribution of resources in the society which impacts a group of individuals. Such resources may be behavioural, economical, and political and policy related which deprives an individual or a group of individual in comparison to other individuals inhabiting the same society. The article clearly reflects that in the United States there has been a status stratum based on economy and religion. The minority population is often viewed with suspicion especially after the incidence with World Trade Centre. On an economical ground, the majority of citizens in the United States do not have access to quality healthcare. The impact of such inequality not only impacts health but gives rise to birth of terrorist activities and societal clashes.
Social work strategies, which deal with addressing social inequality, are highly challenging. The social worker needs to develop effective communication and cultural knowledge of various societies to understand the issue of social inequality. United States is a cosmopolitan country and has a habitation which includes the Englishmen of UK to the Native Americans which also includes migration from other countries due to job compulsion, academic compulsion or political compulsions. Such individuals are divided through language, religion, culture and lifestyle that needs to portrayed through awareness programs and reservation policies that will safeguard the interests of such individuals or strata in the society (Domhoff, 2013).
The important interventions that would be required to address the menace of inequality would be to ensure quality health, reducing unemployment and right of practicing self religions and culture without fear of retaliation. Easy and cost effective health care facilities should be provided through private- government partnerships and the implementation and extension of such facilities must be monitored by the social worker engaged in such services. Social work should also include a build up of rapport to understand the economic profile of such affected persons and would involve in encouraging school left-outs to take admission in Vocational training schools, which will ensure employment in these individuals and address their economic needs (Domhoff, 2013).
The social work skills that are needed to be meticulously implemented are usage of verbal and non-verbal skills, and a deep knowledge of culture and religion of the community being served. Such individuals should be dealt empathetically and should be encouraged to raise their concerns against individuals who create the issue of inequality in them. Human Rights and Officials from the Federal Government would be consulted to address such issue that disturbs the balance of a society in a developed country like United States.
