Abuse of Power in Animal Farm
One of the major themes in Animal Farm is the abuse of power or what can otherwise be put as the corrupt influence exercised by those in power. In this case, the pigs have the power. As conveyed by Old Major in his speech to the other animals, the revolution of the animals initially begins with the best of intentions. They want to achieve a better life where they are treated fairly and are freed from the injustices of human beings which has for so long characterized their lives. However, as soon as Animal Farm is established, the pigs who have emerged out as the leaders after the revolution begin to use their power and authority to disrupt the very principles of the revolution for their own selfish gains. They are only focused on making their lives better as they do not consider the other animals yet they were all against human injustices. In the beginning, corruption in the farm is somewhat subtle, as at first it only starts with the missing apples and milk (Orwell 314). Yet, as the book comes to an end, the pigs have become so much corrupt such that the other animals can no longer differentiate them from humans. This paper, therefore, seeks to reflect and give insight into abuse of power as a theme in George Orwell’s Animal Farm and how this applies to human life.
Some claim that the pigs as the leaders in Animal Farm did not abuse power. This point makes sense because the pigs had never at a time before had the power to lead others and thus they were just trying to use their power in a similar manner used by humans.

They thought that taking advantage of other animals just like humans did would also benefit them. However, the fact remains that the pigs misused their power as leaders of the animals and used this power for their own selfish gains. For instance, they used terms that were not known by the other animals so that they would not know whatever they were referring to. This is seen, for example, when the Squealer said that “the pigs had to expend enormous labors every day upon mysterious things called files, reports, minutes and propaganda” (Orwell 129). The animals are told that the pigs work just as hard as they do while this is completely untrue since they only occupy themselves in self-centered engagements. Therefore, it is evident that the pigs are a corrupt lot and are abusing their power for the own selfish gains.
Abuse of power has been and still remains a major issue of concern in the current world. Leaders have been using their enormous standings or other forms of power for their own selfish benefits and putting other people at a significant disadvantage. Therefore, those who abuse power should cease from such, and they should have in mind that the most effective way of engaging people is treating them in a manner that they also want to be treated. They should use their power to empower others.
