Abstract
The movie “A Beautiful Mind” talks about the story of a mathematical genius John Forbes Nash who has been affected with the paranoia of schizophrenia. The film is directed by Ron Howard and the movie bases on true live events of Nash who is a genius in mathematics. The characteristics of this person are shown by Russel Crowe who is another actor in the movie. When the movie begins, Nash commences his career as a graduate student at Princeton University where his intelligence is well noticed by most of his colleagues and lecturers. However, Nash is a student with too much arrogance, awkwardness and he doesn’t like socializing with other people. He took most of his time trying to discover an innovative mathematical equation. When the movie reaches halfway, we notice that half of the situations and places that are a part of the film are only as a result of Nash’s “beautiful mind’s” illusion. It is at this point that we discover Nash is diagnosed with a certain disease known as schizophrenia. One of the virtual characters developed by Nash includes Charles Herman who appears as his roommate, and studies English Literature.

Schizophrenia has been described in the film as “split mind.” Where it does not refer to some personality split but to a real split which is diagnosed itself in disturbed perceptions, disorganized reasoning, and unsuitable actions and emotions (Myers, 2007). Nash experienced a lot of hallucinations and delusions which were back then diagnosed as symptoms of schizophrenia paranoia.

Schizophrenia has a lot of subtypes which. An example is paranoia schizophrenia, which means that someone having it is preoccupied with hallucinations and delusions with some cases of the grandiosity of persecutions (Howard, 2016). The movie shows that in the early 1950s Nash marries a wife called Alicia. Alicia was a pretty girl, despite Nash being diagnosed with schizophrenia; she still loves him and finds his sound still lovely. Although in the start Nash was unable to share with her wife the deadly disease harassing him, the wife came to know, but she did not shift her love from him. She still loved him. Dr. Ken Davis, who is the psychiatric chairman at a medicine school called Mount Sinai in New York stated that “Crowe does a brilliant job of portraying the mannerism, and some of the behaviors of schizophrenic-the best I have seen on the screen.’’ The bizarre and hallucination behavior experienced by Nash makes him start using drugs but eventually stops after realizing that the drugs lower his sex drive, make his senses dull.’ There are negative or positive signs which are linked to schizophrenia. These positive symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech, inappropriate laughter, and tears (Howard, 2016). Negative symptoms include toneless voices, quietness, rigid bodies, and faces which are expressionless. The film clearly brings out the disease in this manner; from the starts the movie up to around halfway the plot of the movie, we certainly come to notice that Nash doesn’t see real things but he is, and in fact, he has been hallucinating all that time. We can even see that his brain creates imaginary images and characters and puts them in the movie plot. A good example is Charles Herman whom we come to realize that he wasn’t an actual character, but at first, we can see him as a real character since he is a character who has been created in Nash’s mind.
