Introduction
Augmented comes from the augment which means to enhance or to add something. Augmented reality commonly known as the AR, touch feedbacks, graphics and sounds are added to the natural world. This helps in creating the enhanced user experience. Therefore, long or live views representing the physical objects in the real world are augmented by the use of superimposed computer generated images mainly over the operator’s assessment of the actual world (Aukstakalnis, 2017). This plays the role of enhancement towards someone’s modern perception of the actuality. In simple terms, the augmented reality makes use of the already existing natural environment to overlay virtual info on its top. As a result, the viewers experience an improved natural world.
Augmented Reality Apps
Augmented reality apps make it easy for the enhancing of the real objects. Among the commonly used apps in education include Elements 4D for teaching mainly of chemistry formulas. Chromville science that presents drawings in 3D. This can assist learners in learning about bones, skin, and muscles. Blippar used in creating of blips to stop the textbook from boring. Arloon geometry gives learners an opportunity to discover the world of geometry. With Science AR, one can explore various concepts.
Installing these apps requires visiting the company’s website and then downloading them to your devices such as an iPhone, Android mobile or the computer. In most cases, the iOS/Android AR apps can be downloaded from the google play store. AR apps may either work by placing sensors in respect to their surroundings. Cameras may also be used to identify objects or markers. Localized based AR makes use of the GPS, accelerometer or the velocity meter. Augmented Reality and Its Role in Education Field.
With advancement in technology, augmented reality has been applied in various fields today. These presentations vary from the very minor and straightforward such as messages notification to complicated ones such as a threatening surgical procedure. They can also be used in enhancing understanding of particular phenomenon such as in the school setups. Most businesses and mobile phone apps have been found to applying this knowledge of AR. Augmented reality tools usually vary in application. They range from monitors and screens, grasses or handled devices or other forms of display varieties. Gadgets such as head-up displays and google glasses help in putting the reality directly into the face. Handheld devices such as tablets and smartphones display small features that fit in the user’s hands (Kurubacak, 2017). Advancement in technology has created a general perception that AR devices are going to demand less of hardware at the expense of retinal displays and contact lenses.
From the fact that augmented reality utilizes the already existing environment to come up with new but more enhanced information, it has become of great significance to the education field in the today’s technological world. This is because it been found to make lessons and the general learning very interesting and engaging besides being an excellent way of introducing and adding new methods to the learning process. This is because good knowledge should allow for interaction and creativity (Ariso, 2017). The following are some of the significant areas where augmented reality has been put into use in the education sector.
Explaining of Difficult and Abstract Concepts
In the explaining of topics, and concepts perceived to be complicated and abstract by the learners. This can be done by the rendering of the objects that are thought to be challenging to imagine into a 3D model. From this perspective, students find it more comfortable to grasp the concepts believed to be complicated and abstract initially. This is more applicable to the visual learners. This is because it becomes quite simple to translate theoretical materials into reality concepts (Craig, 2013). For example, students have been found to successfully integrate this model successfully in the teaching of mathematics lesson and report education because they have found it interesting, helpful and relaxed.
Engagement and Interaction
AR plays a significant role in meeting and interaction. Incorporating it in classroom assists teachers to fully involve learners into the models that are of three dimensions. This can be done during part of a lesson to assist the teacher support main ideas. This is because it offers extra information relevant for help understand things in different perspective as compared to a situation where only a single teaching method is incorporated. For instance, the school administration should consider transforming the school gym wall to a ball game by adding an augmented reality. As a result, when the children through balls against this form of a wall, they will automatically hit the floating shapes. This becomes a source of fun for them besides being an excellent physical exercise.
Discovering and Learning of New Concepts
They play a role in finding and learning new concepts. For instance, students planning to visit a museum can make use of smartphones to see critical historical contents of their interest. Although not all the places like museums can afford these augmented reality gadgets, where applicable, they play a vital role in enhancing what they needed to learn. However, the good thing is that AR has become accessible via mobile devices hence learners can access them through their phones whenever the plan for a visit in areas without.
Object Modelling
Augmented reality plays a crucial role in object modeling. This helps in quiz solving exercise, manual training, and hand exercises. Furthermore, it plays an essential role in earning a substantial amount of knowledge relevant to any lesson. For instance, AR apps have been developed for medical students to assist in the learning and exploring of the human anatomy in a more detailed manner. Education becomes more interesting especially in cases where several color schemes and styles have been put in place (Furht, 2011). In the teaching of geography lessons, the transparent globe can be made to demonstrate the rotation of the earth around the sun. Well planned and designed models can also be used to illustrate the planets among many other topics.
Training of Learners
Augmented reality plays a significant role in the preparation of learners especially in cases where mere theoretical knowledge is not enough. This is because in scenarios where students are just but passive listeners and observe, proper skills needed in professional areas end up lacking in such category of pupils. This applies mostly in the technical faculties where hand on experience and practice are required. Through the interaction with AR features, students are capable of conducting virtual training with the help of digital simulations and modeling together with augmented tutorials (Aukstakalnis, 2017). This helps in acquiring a substantial amount of experience at the end. It evidents that more engaged and motivated learners tend to understand issues in a better manner. This encourages faster learning.
Simulation of learner’s curiosity
A classroom with augmented reality animation helps in capturing of the learner’s attention regardless of the age or the productive day. As a result, such kind of learners become well motivated to study. Also, putting an extra data for instance of a person bio short, historical data of events or sites and fun facts would play a crucial role in giving pupils abroad spectrum of understanding topics. Of great significance is that pupils can still scan particular elements of a book and get an audio, video tips or even a text from their teacher while still at home doing their homework. Useful data regarding their course may also result in advanced communication with the teacher or other pupils.
There is also the simulation of the learners’ curiosity. As a result, augmented reality learning becomes more entertaining and interesting to students. This makes learners to enjoy the learning process. As a result, AR acts as an excellent tool to for simulating pupils’ intellectual curiosity. With progressive and new ideas put in place, there is the awakening of the mind so that one can think passionately about what in the real world both those surrounding and those out of reach (Ariso, 2017). This helps in transforming from the old and boring lecture methods to a more interactive presentation.
There are high retention rates since students can scan the models of their choice in a 3-dimension. Furthermore, such models as the human body, art or even an atom are brought to reality other being taught something out of the site. Augmented reality also solves the problem of language barrier. This is especially for cases where learners move to study in a different country where their language is not applicable.
Challenges of AR to Education
Despite the advancement in technology and its application, they are never short of problems. In most cases, hardware obstacles arise that requires a well-trained expert. This is because these systems obtain colossal information that needs to be monitored closely. Furthermore, they need to keep to date to remain reliable. Designing a small, easily portable, fast and light hardware to display all the graphics has to be a significant challenge. In a classroom set up, facilitators to need to be conversant with these systems. This is because even if the AR application were available with an uninformed facilitator, it would have little meaning or end up not serving the purpose it was intended to.
However, despite these shortcomings, I would recommend the implementation of the augmented reality to the classroom because have found it very interesting besides making learning more enjoyable and easy to understand. Learners had always involved a factor that helped do away with the boredom in the classroom as it used to be in the past when such technology had not been implemented to the education system. The ease of it availability is another factor to be proud of. In the current world, smartphones are readily available to almost every individual. This is an advantage since learners can use their Android phones to download the AR apps and install them on their mobile devices which assists in reinforcing of the concepts taught in the classroom. Furthermore, it fun when learning on their own as objects is projected in a 3D model.
As a matter of facts, if the school institutions were to purchase all the physical learning materials, they would be too expensive for some of the schools to afford. Also, these materials are subject to being worn out with time or may get displaced. For instance, a plastic model of a human body or organs of the body to be used by nursing students would fall and break to pieces. However, if installed in the learner’s devices or school computers, they are guaranteed for durability. Also, AR materials are very flexible since they can be used by learners whether at school or home a factor that makes them convenient for usage. Being born in a digital era, where almost everything is technology oriented, learners can use this opportunity to discover more talents and passions that are important for inspiring their future endeavors. For these and many other merits discussed in the text, I am firmly recommending for implementation of AR into the education system.
Summary
In summary, we should embrace technology because we cannot fight it. This is because every day it is bringing up a new knowledge that we have to adopt. Technology has assisted in solving the majority of the cumbersome issues faced in our daily lives. Therefore, its applicability is extensive. From the discussed points above, technology has made learning more interesting besides stimulating learners to study. As a result of augmented of reality, for instance, learning has been friendly, familiar and exciting besides helping retain the concepts learned since the learning environment has been made more familiar and realistic through being enhanced.
