If the amount of Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate reacting with Vinegar is increased,
the amount of Carbon (IV) Oxide produced also increases.
Reaction between Acetic acid (Vinegar) and Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate is a
decomposition reaction where the Carbonate is broken down by the acid to yield a salt ,water and
Carbon (IV)Oxide as shown in the equation below:

An experiment for the above reaction was carried out whereby 50mls of Acetic Acid
reacted with 0.25g, 0.5g,0.75g,1g and 1.25g of the Carbonate respectively. A balloon was fixed
at the mouth of the test tube which became inflated as Carbon (IV) Oxide gas was produced
from the reaction.
Results showed that the inflation increased as the amount of the Carbonate increased i.e.
the reaction between 1.25g of the Carbonate with the 50mls of Acetic acid produced the largest
volume of the gas. This is because increasing the amount of the Carbonate increases the number
of moles reacting. Law of conservation of mass requires that all atoms that enter into a reaction
as reactants must exit as products.
CONCLUSION
The volume of Carbon (IV) Oxide produced therefore is directly proportional to the amount
of the Carbonate used in the experiment.(“ … the components; or to determine the equilibrium

the distribution of chemicals in the …” Silberberg, Martin 1125 ).

not have air inside ,it was deflated.
The amount of reactants must be equal to the amount of products and that’s why
increasing a reactant results to an increase in the product.
Stoichiometry of chemical equations involve reacting mole ratios and thus
changing the amount a reactant interferes with the reacting mole ratios.
