Abstract
Business process-orientation (BPO) has been a major subject for various kinds of businesses because processes are increasingly supported by information systems. However, in many businesses, there are gaps between business processes and information systems. Organizational change is necessary to promote a process-oriented culture in order to drive value from business information systems. Since a business process reflects the knowledge of conducting business, process knowledge and management is critical for economic success. It is dependent on the efficient creation and implementation of processes, optimization and their integration with business partners. The essence of BPO is the implementation of an information system which involves the mechanisms that influence quality, efficiency and information management. Such elements contribute to the improvements in the organization’s economic situation. The paper is based on the Pinnacle West case study. The paper will analyze various aspects of the case study, including the challenges that Denny Brown faces in creating the process-oriented organization and some of the lessons learned from the case.

One of the challenges that Denny Brown faces is employee resistance as well as the organizational culture that has been consistent since the company’s inception.

The process-oriented model is likely to affect employees working within the organization since they will have to adjust their working style. Also, he would face the challenges of transitioning towards a new management style, sustaining a process infrastructure, and changing management for the transitioning period. The company had no formal structure and heavily relied on employees to get work done. Denny Brown noticed that his IT organization lacked formal metrics and the company was dependent on individuals’ knowing.
While creating the “process-oriented culture” in an organization, some of the requirements for Pinnacle West include planning an execution, process metrics, innovation, and recognition. The company needs to set the priorities to bring transformation which requires alignment with corporate objectives and vision as brought out in the case (Raghu, 2010). The management and the employees will have to make deliberate efforts to adjust accordingly. Since business information systems are part of the process-oriented culture, Pinnacle West should address the process metric requirement because it is an ideal metric that is automated, timely and available.
I believe it’s necessary to push the “process-oriented culture” to the entire organization. Today, great business transformations are taking place within IT. Most businesses are increasingly focusing on better customer-facing services (Popova & Sharpanskykh, 2008). It is recommended that Brown observes the nature of the interaction between IT and business as it drives value from information systems.
From the case study, I have learned that collaboration as a team and implementing changes to business information systems through planning and execution as well as innovation and recognition is important to maintain culture. These are some of the things I would apply to my organization, Amazon.com, Inc. For instance, incorporating innovative business changes by fostering creativity and innovation would be ideal for Amazon. The management at Pinnacle West is effective at promoting a process-oriented culture because it has identified a high-level process model that focuses on effective teamwork and coincides with their goals. One thing that management could do better to improve on creating and implementing the business information system is to define the requirements quickly as the IT staff currently awaits the business to determine requirements.
