  • Achievement of short, medium and long term objectives.
  • Business performance improvement.
  • Promotion and effectiveness of teamwork.
  • Happy and motivated employees.

The way in which a leader exercises the direction of the people in charge constitutes his most basic essence, but leadership is not limited only to this. In itself, leadership also does not have a unique and unappealable definition because, as well as the leader, the definition of leadership takes into account many aspects of an individual’s personality. With the passage of time, more and more authors define these two concepts, where their own theories are provided to the qualities of the subject and its activity with others. Next, some concepts of various authors are mentioned to define the leader and his leadership:

Defining the leader:

"A leader is the one who makes us advance. It is the one who manages to turn on the passion and that awakens the best we carry inside. (…) We can talk about strategy, vision or good ideas, but reality is much simpler: a good leader uses emotions.”(Goleman Daniel, Leadership The Power of Emotional Intelligence, 2013, P. 91)

Defining leadership:

“Leadership is the process between a leader and his followers through influence, to achieve corporate objectives, instilling the change."

Based on the analyzed, we can affirm that the leader is the one who exercises leadership, which is understood as the ability, natural or acquired over time, to exercise and motivate the change to others, inspiring them to the achievement of business objectives orpersonal.

Power, authority and politics are aspects that should not be confused when talking about leadership or contemplating the qualities of a leader. Although leadership is a type of power, politics and power apply, forming an authority in order to achieve what is desired, however, the following points are not part of a good leadership:

  • That authority contractually exercised.
  • The excessive abuse of power over people and the allocation of their activities.
  • Political actions that favor only one individual or specific group without considering others.

Well -worn leadership must motivate people positively, to know and encourage the development of their abilities, orienting them to achieve the goals drawn for the benefit of the organization and the whole team.

Author Alfonso Siliceo Aguilar mentions the result between the difference in the presence of the following elements to explain the essence of a good leader: to understand a little more in way of what constitutes and integrates the personality and qualities of aleader, we will address the classification that encompasses these characteristics in 6 types or profiles.

According to author Daniel Goleman, these profiles are based on the components of emotional intelligence, which we will address a little later, but not before understanding that to be a leader, one not only must present the characteristics of a profile only, but the profiles, as well as individuals adapt according to the situation. As we mentioned, individuals who perform a leadership position do not manifest the characteristics of a profile only, but have the tendency to a mixture. This mixture consists of one or more combined elements according to the circumstances and the different profiles, as well as a need of the particular moment, but despite the classifications and their characteristics, the more styles have a leader, the better. However, the minimal mixture advisable is from the domain of 4 of the 6 types or profiles, for example, the following:

  1. Visionary
  2. Democratic
  3.  Affiliate
  4.  Coaching.

An effective leader is able to change flexibly between styles to improve work environment and business performance

SELF APPRAISAL:

Below are some tables arranged for self-assessment in which it will be possible to discover through a simple method, the personal inclination to the most dominant leadership profiles. The result is only an orientation to know a more personalized trend of individual leadership style and its related, specially designed to promote good habits and improve in the areas of opportunity.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Indicate with a "yes" the behaviors of each of the styles that you consider frequent in your individual actions or the person you want to evaluate. Only frequent behaviors, not those that are sporadic or exceptional. At the end, add the total number of the "yes" for each style and fill in the summary table at the end of the year.

Interpretation and results:

  •  The distribution of leadership styles is different for each person. This difference constitutes the personal "mixture" of each individual and shows a base guide of the type of leadership he plays.
  • Generally one of the styles can result with a higher score, that style is the dominant one, but not the permanent. Can be changed and improved.
  • There are styles that appear sporadically or we can even present only one behavior without any other characteristic of the same profile.
  • According to the situation to which we face the type of behavior we must take to face it, so the "style flexibility is indispensable" to exercise effective leadership.
  •   The individual who shows openness to understand the styles, will be easier for him to move normally among the different profiles or, at least, dominate the 4 basic profiles previously recommended.
  • Each style is associated with very specific competencies and support skills. It is necessary to know them to correctly exercise the style of each.
  • All leadership styles are useful, even those that can be considered as toxic. These styles are usually extremely useful in emergency situations where the attitude necessary to carry out a disorder work team is a more severe or strict. To better understand communication, it must be seen as a process.

Indeed, communication is a simple process, the complicated thing is the practice and ability to do it efficiently. It consists of giving and receiving messages through several channels of different formalities, but these channels can be affected by various factors that obstruct them, these obstructions can be physical (technological limitations, climatic, time, etc.) or emotional (organization of ideas and prioritization of precarious thoughts, aversion to certain activities, personal conflicts, etc.).

We must all be highly effective when communicating, and with greater reason a leader, because its entire team depends on the.

To have effective communication, certain rules must be followed to influence others and achieve results; That is achieved through motivation and empowerment.

Communication and leadership go hand in hand because a leader seeks to influence his collaborators, which is essential to create a positive relationship. There are even leadership definitions that take their basis in the essentiality of communicating. According to the leader’s style, there are those who choose to communicate their ideas in an open and honest way. This method is very efficient since collaborators learn with the good example the exercise of ethics and integrity.   It is wrong to think that to communicate an idea just talk and everything will be clear. In large part, talk if it facilitates things, but it is not the only thing that constitutes effective communication. To communicate effectively you have to know first what are the ways of doing so and the situations that we can face in doing so incorrectly. In addition, a unilateral communication where only the person in charge speaks and does not listen, is not communication or much less leadership. To communicate, you also have to know how to listen, understand, be empathetic (having or looking for the development of emotional intelligence), knowing the most effective channels and knowing the rules to do it efficiently. Next, the aspects to be taken into account and its importance are shown, starting with the points that make up emotional intelligence:

Rules for constructive communication:

In the following diagram you can see the basic rules for every individual who wishes to convey or communicate effectively with the members that make up their work team.

The suggestion of the same is not limited only to the immediate work team with which it is coexted every day, but also includes managers and administrative in any case and as much as necessary. Rules for good feedback:

The "feedback" or feedback consists in responding to the messages received. It is very important to use in this process everything learned about emotional intelligence, since it will be necessary.

There are three skills for optimal feedback, 1. Praise, 2. Describe the behavior and 3. Make constructive criticism.

Next, the process is described more in detail: the competences are also known as the set of skills that each individual has to perform a job or solve a problem. These skills can be natural or, they can be developed over time.

These competences are classified according to the set of activities in which they are necessary, for example: also known with the ISO abbreviation for its acronym in English (International Organization for Standarization), the International Standardization Organization has been responsible for developing a set of standardsthat can be applied in any type of company to ensure that they meet adequate quality standards and their management. These standards are organized by sections in which they cover topics as guides and tools for application in organizations and also explains the evaluation and supervision methods to verify compliance with these guidelines, valued by the specialized ISO personnel.

These types of regulations are endorsed through a certification granted by ISO.

However, not belonging to this organization does not mean that it cannot be known more about applicable regulations, especially those known as "volunteers". These types of regulations are not certifiable, but indispensable. As indispensable as social responsibility and civility.

As we have mentioned before, the subject who exercises power without considering anything else is only authoritarian, while the subject who applies his knowledge and competences for a common good exercises leadership and therefore is a leader.

Every leader must have a set of fundamental ethical and moral values and codes, these principles are unappealable and, to the extent that they are applied and respected, their results will be increasingly obvious and positive, thus bringing, as a secondary effect, a gradual improvementof the objectives set for the company in particular.

The commitment to this norm or principle of the common good is directly linked to the personality of the leader and its own discipline and values, which is not only limited to business or administrative objectives, but also sees beyond the common good of society. Although it does not seem like it and although there are no authorities that make sure of thorough compliance with this essential principle, it will be the leader who determines its application and its importance towards the culture of its work environment. History of Social Responsibility:

The issue of social responsibility is a concept with which companies voluntarily integrate interest on the impact caused to society and the environment. This vision undertakes to encourage respectful treatment to the groups mentioned under a protection and sustainability scheme;Well, being a company or organization of any proportion, does not result in the cause of exclusion or immunity on the proper use that is due to the elements or resources to which the whole society has the right to enjoy and the obligation to preserve. However, this concept is still young.

Approximately at the end of the forties, in a historical context where a society devastated by war, seeks to resurface at all costs with the hope of a better future. The initiatives and proposals for production and innovation go upwards. There is no war on the horizon and, despite being an inexperienced society, they have enough knowledge to put hunger and epidemics at bay. But at the expense of what?… Of the exploitation of natural and human resources equally.

Companies arise and with them their mass production. Some of them remain, but others without knowing it, are the pioneers of the bad practices in the care of the work environment and in the management of the quality of the products and services they offer. This trend remains for many years until, eventually someone arises with the idea of questionWhy fix it?".

In this way, many authors are launched to deepen issues that address the effects of this carelessness through different science approaches or philosophical currents. One of the authors who are attributed as a spearhead on this topic is Howard R. Bowen, who published his book "Social Responsibilities of the Businessmen" (social responsibilities of business man) in 1953, a book in which he explains the obligations of entrepreneurs or employers of the time towards society. And hence other concepts are derived or attached to our days, thanks to the evolution and emergence of the points of interest and norms such as those that we will see below.
