“The Day It Happened” is about domestic abuse. The narrator brings out some incidences indicating domestic. It is the day that a great fight emerged between the two couples who are victims of domestic abuse leading to the separation. It is the day when Josie felt that enough is enough and decided to leave Ramon for the sake of the safety of the baby. This essay talks about the various issues that we can attribute to domestic abuse. Three of the incidences pointed out in the story has been discussed as follows.
The fist issue the narrator brings out is about the two couple, Josie, and Ramon. The narrator is scared about the fact that Jose is picking up and leaving Ramon. The two had been together for just six months and already they were undergoing serious problems. Ramon used to work until very late at seven from Monday to Friday as well as five in the evening on Saturday. Whenever he arrived in the house from work, he expected a well-prepared dinner to be ready on the table after exactly five minutes upon his arrival.

He expected the dinner to be at the right temperature. Failure to meet these conditions, Ramon would yell at Josie. Sometimes the yelling would arise without a genuine reason. This is one of the incidents of domestic abuse because generally, the society expects people who stay together to stay in harmony and to respect one another as much as possible. Furthermore yelling degrades the dignity of someone withstanding the fact that everyone needs to be respected especially in a marriage setup.

The second issue attributed to domestic abuse comes out one Saturday evening when Josie and Ramon dressed up for a party in a bar down the avenue. Both of them we looking great, proud and cheerful. Josie was looking adorable on that day. The narrator describes her as small plump with naturally curly hair, long lashes, and dark eyes. It is quite unfair that her natural beauty aroused jealousy within Ramon that Saturday evening. Josie smiled a lot when she was happy or excited but of late she had been very sad since she conceived.
Every Saturday night, a fight between the two couple was guaranteed. Verbal abuses such, “A man cannot be a man with such a wet rag around” was very common. He used to yell at Josie why men were staring at her eating her up with their eyes. Despite the fact that the marriage was still very young, of about six months, the couples started the domestic quarrel immediately they moved in. The narrator explains that on the day it happened, one could be able to hear Ramon at two right through the floor. He resorted to throwing things in the house aimlessly then graduated to hitting her withstanding the fact that Josie was pregnant during that time.
The neighborhood came to notice the domestic abuse Josie was going through when she missed the morning mass for the first time at St. Francis. Mami walked to her apartment to find out if anything was wrong because it was not her nature to miss the mass. Unfortunately, Josie appeared at the door with a bad bruise on her face evidencing the act of domestic abuse. The narrator explains that she was too ashamed of going to the church because of the big bruise that was on her face. It is the incident that led to the departure of Josie. Beating a wife it completely wrong and it is even worse to hit a woman who is pregnant. We can, therefore, term that as domestic abuse which wrong even constitutionally and punishable in a court of law.
The third issue that portrays an act of domestic violence is when the narrator says that no one in the neighborhood was could be on Ramon’s side including Joe, who also likes bullying his wife as well as his daughters. Joe used to bully his wife and daughters but did not realize because he thought the Ramon’s incident was worse. The narrator, therefore, brings out the issue of domestic abuse that existed in the Joe’s family. Tito, who also use to yell about “wearing the pants in this family,” also felt that whatever Ramon had done was too much. It also brings out the issue of domestic abuse withstanding the fact that he also involves in domestic abuse. The fact that Ramon used to mistreat Josie is very unfair because the narrator explains that Josie was a fine person, a sweety pie, a quite homebody, someone who adored him. Ramon has, therefore, has no right to abuse or mistreat Josie because the pregnant woman deserves better treatment.

In conclusion, we can argue that it is not to involve in any domestic abuse. We can derive from the story that portrays the result as separation leaving Ramon very sad and regretting his actions. We can, therefore, argue that the story is about domestic violence based on the presented facts and arguments above.
