Speech on Plastic Pollution
“Ladies and gentlemen, the use of plastics has significantly increased over the last couple of years. This increased availability and utilization of plastic materials have brought about an environmental menace characterized by careless disposal of used plastics. Estimates indicate that each year, between 5 and 13 million tons of plastics get discarded into the environment (Haward 667). Plastics are durable and non-biodegradable; they stay in the environment for a very long time and cause irreparable damage to ecosystems which play an important role in sustaining life on earth. The society, therefore, needs to direct its efforts towards curbing plastic pollution to prevent its detrimental impact on wildlife habitats, the wildlife, and even humans. Between 0.2% and 0.3% of plastic produced on an annual basis end up in the seas and oceans. Here, the plastics interfere with water quality as well as marine life. Animals residing in the oceans and seas such as whales and turtles have been found to have plastic materials in their stomachs (Haward 668). Traces of plastics have also been found in the tinniest seas creatures such as planktons. Reports also indicate that over 260 species of animals have been entangled in plastic waste (Haward 668). The consumption of plastics by sea creatures as well as the frequent entanglement in these wastes has significantly contributed to impaired movement and feeding, lacerations, ulcer, diminished reproductive capacity as well as deaths.

As such, improper disposal of plastic wastes poses a great threat to marine life.
People need to ensure that plastics are properly disposed and used only when necessary. This is because they negatively impact on human health and the environment. The plastic production process often involves adding certain chemicals that have proved to be harmful to humans. These chemicals include polybrominated diphenyl ether, mercury, lead, phthalates and bisphenol A (Kumar 2). The use of plastics, therefore, needs to be mitigated to prevent the global population from developing serious conditions such as cancer. The government needs to prioritize the recycling of plastic waste instead of throwing them into the environment without much care. Such recycling will lead to not only the general attractiveness of landscapes but also the clean environment.
Plastic remains one of the most widely utilized materials across the different sectors and industries. Plastics have widespread applications because of their characteristics such as durability and high resistance to corrosion. The material has played an important role in revolutionizing sectors such as digital technology, healthcare, and transportation. However, the widespread utilization of plastic is what has led to the material emerging as one of the leading pollutants today. We are producing more plastic than needed, hence the need to re-evaluate some of the ways we use it.
In conclusion, it is imperative that we direct our efforts towards curbing plastic pollution given the detrimental impact it has on wildlife habitats, the wildlife, and even humans. The production of plastic has been increasing over the years, and a significant portion of this material has been leaking into the environment. Poorly discarded plastics pose a significant threat to wildlife both on land and in the oceans. It is also a health hazard for humans and stands out as an eyesore on land and out in the seas.”
