Dental Hygienist: Personal Statement
While growing up, we used to live in the countryside with my family. Here things were much relaxed, and life did not involve much of the activities that are characteristics of the urban living. In this rural neighborhood, many of the things were usually done locally as the small settlement did not have much exposure. However, one thing that I used to observe is that many of the people used to complain about toothaches. My mother used to have the same problem. There are times especially during the cold when she could have swollen gums. The pain from the gums could make it hard for her to get any sleep. I thought of the ways that I could help her, but in most cases, I could watch her suffering from the pain throughout the night.
As I grew up, I thought to myself that one day I could help people avoid the problems that come with a toothache. My thought was to find out the reason that people suffer from tooth problems. I realized that one of the biggest challenges was poor dental hygiene. Most of the people from my rural home did not take care of their teeth. Therefore, I thought to myself that I need to learn more about the ways that I could teach and help people to follow some basic hygiene and reduce problems with their teeth. Although I could not help my mom because her condition had already got worse, I think I can help other people not to lead to that situation. From this perspective, I felt that a course in dental hygiene would be an excellent way to learn on ways to keep the teeth healthy and avoid toothaches (Kelsch et al.
