Dependence and Addiction to Drugs
Today, a lot of people are deeply entrenched in the use of the drugs. Most of this people cannot operate without indulging in drug abuse. It is imperative to recognize that must of them have tried to break from using the drugs, but they have failed. From the data collected by the scientists, it is clear that the majority of the drug users are focused on satisfying their need without taking into consideration the lives of their relatives or friends. It is, therefore, plausible to conclude use of drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and alcohol make people slaves. People end up without a sense of responsibility and their focus not on improving their lives but to satisfy the need for the said drugs. This person is said to be addicted to drugs. That is drugs have become their masters. They are also dependent on the drugs meaning that they cannot live with them (Weiss et al, 2017) As a result of being reliant on the drugs people become unproductive. There are not in a position to take part in the building of the country. Accordingly, they turn out to be a problem to the government. It therefore, necessary to find a way of helping these people to recover from the misuse of the drugs.
Four take away from the course
There is a huge difference between being dependent on drugs and being addicted to them. Most of the people assume them to be one thing. Many organizations have tried to offer various definition to make people understand the differences that exist between the two.

It is important to understand the two terms thoroughly so that to provide people with the help they need. Dependence on the drugs means that people have symptoms of withdrawal and are not able to live a day without taking the drugs. It is probable to be hooked on drugs devoid of abusing them but not for a very long time.
What surprised me must be that there existed a difference between drug dependency and drug abuse. Initially, I thought them to be one and the same thing. I was in a position, after attending the course, to understand the clear differences that existed between the two. I was capable of understanding that different sections of the brain are accountable for addiction and dependence on drugs (Weiss et al, 2017). In that case, it follows that one can be addicted to a drug say morphine without being dependent on it. My perception of drug abuse was that people were in a position to stop using drugs but they did not want to stop. During the course I was able to change my viewpoint. I understood that people needed help to stop abusing drugs. Without the use of professional help, it would become impossible to control and eventually stop the uses of the substances.
The area that was most important for me personally is to have the realization that I can in many ways help people to recover from the abuse drugs. With this understanding, I will be in a position to help people who are close to me either at home or at the workplace. I will be in a position not to judge people for the habit they have developed. Academically, I have come to the realization that there is a lot that needs to be done to help people understand how drugs work in the system. It is important to continue conducting research to help people to have a changed perception about the use of drugs.
