Domestic violence
Domestic violence is a relationship where one or all of the partners receive physical violence, emotional abuse, or intimidation from the other partner. Domestic violence does not necessarily have to happen within a marriage or a home environment as it also occurs in intimate relationships. The most common form of abuse is physical violence. Emotional abuse is also common but highly unrecognized as it does not inflict any physical scars on the victim. Emotional abuse affects the victim’s self-esteem, confidence, and feelings of self-worth. Often, emotional abuse involves bullying, rejection, fear, and isolation. Social abuse is another form of domestic violence where one partner prevents the other from interacting with other people. Sometimes, the abuser may also prevent the victim from having personal religious or cultural beliefs. There are multiple situations that promote domestic violence. According to a study by WHO (Abramsky, et al., 2011), people who were exposed to domestic violence when young, alcohol abuse and marriage at a young age had high risks of experiencing domestic abuse.
There are numerous reasons why victims stay with abusive partners. The main reason behind abuse is to inflict fear and damage one’s self-confidence. Often, the victim feels inadequate but lacks the voice. Victims of emotional abuse may not identify themselves as victims because the scars are not physically evident. The victims might also feel that there is no one better for them and therefore no need of leaving the abuser.

In most instances, the relationship is not always abusive. There is a period when the abuse stops and the abuser promise to change. Also, some victims feel responsible for their partner’s violence. The strongest reason is that the two share a life together, especially in marriage, which is hard to leave.
