Methodology
Participants and sample size
The sample size was made up of 155 participants from eight different universities in the United States.
Data Collection
The online survey instrument was used to collect the data during the 2016 spring semester. The invitation had a cover letter containing information about the study and an online survey link. The student who participated were volunteers, and the responses were unidentified.
Instrument
Originally, the online survey questionnaire had approximately 47 questions. However, after a review panel of five experts who had experience of over seven years of online teaching experience, the questions were modified, added and some deleted. Finally, the online survey instrument had 38 questions where three were open-ended (Martin, & Bolliger, 2018). Twenty-nine were Likert –type items ranging from very unimportant being one to very important being five. Also, there were six questions on demographic. After data collection had been done, there was the calculation of the coefficients were done using the Cronbach’s alpha to ensure the reliability of the instrument. The reliability results of the three subscales were concluded to be satisfactory.

Data Analysis
Nine cases of the 155 participants had some data missing. Therefore, they were removed from the dataset, and only 146 cases remained (Martin, & Bolliger, 2018). There was the replacement of the missing values with frequencies, means, and descriptive statistics. There was an addition of three new variables. Analytical coding and topics were used to be able to analyze the open-ended questions responses. The responses were coded to create various categories and then sorted, arranged, and compared to develop common themes.
