Exploitation of children and adolescents in the workplace

At present, children and adolescents of the Dominican Republic live in better conditions that about ten years ago. There have been institutional and political transformations that are significant and that have strengthened their rule of law, but it is still mandatory to better make the opportunities that promise these modifications to ensure sustainable human development, particularly for childhood and adolescence. Despite the renowned advances, inequalities continue and in some cases increase. There is a large percentage of children and adolescents that are excluded, living in poor marginal and rural urban areas, both in La Romana province and throughout the country.

Child labor is a true, legal and social problem that is lived in the province, is presented under formal, informal, legal, illegal, lawful and illegal conditions, due to the non -existent efficacy of public policies. The justification found to allow child labor is the disturbing economic crisis in the country;as well as poverty, unemployment, lack of effective policies by the State, the deprecation of cheap labor, adult abuse towards children and adolescents who see them as inferior, submissive, docile beings and on many occasions they areseen as objects;What causes abuse and extreme exploitation.

Faced with this reality, we have as opposing the norms and principles established in international treaties and agreements, the Dominican Constitution, the Code for the Protection of Children and Adolescents as well as the Labor Code that establish that children and adolescents are subjects are subjectof rights, which must be protected by the State, the family and society, considered as a priority and primary care group due to the supreme interest of the child’s well -being, recognizing and ensuring all the rights that are conceived from them from the moment of theirbirth.

This has generated social and legal phenomena that despite not being exclusive in our country, require radical and urgent measures to face them. In the case of child labor exploitation, the family as such, has been affected by socio -economic conflicts, which have generated and caused that a large portion of children and adolescents are forced to cooperate with income or procure their ownmaintenance.
