Moral Theory
The most robust moral theory presented in the text titled Problems from philosophy is that of deontological philosophy. According to Rachels, this moral principle believes in the duty of human beings to respect ethical codes irrespective of the consequences (147). The theory supposes that individuals have the dignity that deserves respect and should not be used as a means to achieve an end. Therefore, in the case of sacrificing the life of a healthy teenager to save ten others, the deontological moral theory believes it is wrong. Unlike utilitarianism that leans on the good of the majority of consequences, this theory believes in duty or the principle of categorical imperative (Rachels 149). Killing a human being for whichever reason is wrong because it is the responsibility of human beings to uphold life in all circumstances.
The deontological theory by Immanuel Kant makes it clear that people should not use the excuse of consequence as proposed by utilitarianism. It is better for the ten people who are sick to die but that teenager to live because they are autonomous. Michael Sandel explains this theory and refers it to the Kantian Moral Philosophy. He asserts that morality should not be about the end but also the means. Acting morally calls for individuals to be not only free but also bound by moral laws. The duty to respect self and societal moral principles ensures that there is order in the community.
In conclusion, the Kantian Moral Philosophy believes that the rational human being will not engage in murder in any circumstance because they respect individuals’ dignity.
