I strongly agree with the ideas expressed in the post. It is always right to act straightforwardly especially when one has a role to play in the society. In Frank Serpico’s situation, he was in a dilemma of whether to stick to the brotherhood code or whistle blow the evils in the New York Police Department (NYPD). He chose the latter as according to him that was the most ethical and professional way to act. I believe Serpico knew the consequences that could ensue after reporting such as being ostracized by his colleagues. In the real sense, a police officer’s role is to protect the citizens against the evils such as robbery and arresting evildoers. Apart from that, the police play a crucial role in the community of maintaining law and order. Therefore, it is unfortunate if they are the ones that become perpetrators of such crimes. Corruption, for instance, has been a significant challenge in many countries around the world. It would be least expected to have police officers propagating the vice.
Evidently, the blue wall of silence is an outdated code within the police force as it is hypocritical and oppressive. In fact, it is one of the hindrances that deter ethical officers from reporting criminal activities against their colleagues. What is more, the situation has worsened such that some officers are colluding with criminals by facilitating them with firearms that are used to commit crimes.

The likes of Frank Serpico exist within the forces, but due to the blue wall of silence code, they opt to remain in silence. Numerous bureaucracies, either written or unwritten, within law enforcement agencies usually cripple whistleblowing. Most officers have killed their colleagues for reporting their wicked behaviors. In the light of these considerations, the post highlights the critical issues that should be addressed to make the forces ethical.
