Robert Maranto in passage A has a more compelling argument than Paul M. Hewitt, the author of passage B. Maranto focuses his attention on the reasons why haters dislike charter schools. At the onset of passage A, the author contends that public schools cannot match the quality of charter schools whereby he argues that the charter schools provide a conducive environment a fete that the public schools have not managed to replicate. Maranto further states that those with a dissenting opinion on charter schools center on some of the failing charter institutions. Through giving the version of the dissenters, the author enables a reader to understand the reasoning of the other party. Maranto then explains that indeed charter schools produce more academically gifted students and more teachers’ and parent’s satisfaction (Maranto n.p). The author bases his argument on his vast field experience which makes his case more relevant and authoritative. Also, to support his argument, Maranto uses a quantitative study published in a credible journal that established that charter schools excel where school district leadership is ineffective which further strengthens his position.
Differently, Hewitt assumes a defensive stance in developing his arguments against charter schools in passage B which consequently removes objectivity from his piece. Notably, the author takes a disadvantaged position with the aim of reaping sympathy from readers.

For instance, Hewitt opens his passage with a quote about the downtrodden of the society which effectively causes the reader to be clouded by emotions; thus they cannot read the passage objectively (Hewitt n.p). Regardless of his experience working in the education sector, Hewitt fails to recognize the presence of socioeconomic stratification in the society in the deciding where to enroll ones’ children for education. Therefore, the failure of the author to acknowledge the independence of choice on the premises of financial wellbeing of an individual weakens his argument.
