There is an argument on whether a management approach used in a factory can be applied in a healthcare organization. The management process and environment is a contentious issue. There are multiple similarities and differences between management in healthcare and industries like manufacturing and financial. The modern healthcare is like a business with more concern for improved outcomes and performance. There are multiple business functions which are needed for proper healthcare delivery. Marketing and competition are more vital due to an increased number of for-profit hospitals. On the other hand, healthcare is a professionally unique field with special needs.
Similarities
Healthcare is similar to industries like hotels in terms of customer satisfaction. Hospital management is more concerned about the satisfaction of patients. Just like a hotel or aviation industry, healthcare organizations vary in size, settings and quality. They have a certain organizational hierarchy which depends on responsibilities. For-profit hospital leadership and management strives to provide a better customer experience (Zygourakis et.al. 2014). Like the airline industry, healthcare management is responsible for providing a quality working and service environment. Both manufacturing and healthcare industry seek to reduce errors to obtain a flawless product and a better patient outcome, respectively.

Differences
In industry management like manufacturing, jobs are highly organized and can be broken down easily into detailed jobs. It easier to schedule output, allocate resources and decide how many units to be produced. On the other hand, healthcare organizations have variable activities. Here, management is less refined and jobs are not easily broken into detail tasks. It’s hard to schedule output and specific controls are hard to establish. Healthcare organizations need more employee enthusiasm and motivation (Jones & Bartlett, 2014). In industry management, individuals only need to follow instructions which are insufficient in healthcare.
Departmental Characteristics
The essential characteristics of a department influence the management and supervision style. A department with more varied work means procedures are difficult to schedule and control. More tasks mean their performance will take time. According to Jones & Bartlett (2014), variable activities requires a manager to emphasize on controlling the activities carried out by employees. Mobile employees across a large area require the supervisor to keep track of people who are out of site. In healthcare, most employees are educated and skilled professionals and can be relied on to make sound judgments compared to managing unskilled workers. Most tasks in healthcare are not easily defined as for the case of a staff nurse. Therefore, the management is expected to provide case-by-case guidance.
