Drug abuse poses significant threats to the user and the society. The problem of illegal drug use can be investigated using qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods of research. Understanding the factors that precipitate unlawful drug use is essential in determining the various strategies that can solve the problem. In this case, the use of questionnaires would be useful in providing specific information on the causes of drug abuse and supporting data.
The use of questionnaires during research is beneficial in cases where the researcher intends to assess large populations. Questionnaires are a form of surveys that make it possible for the researcher to gather data on personal perspectives and experiences from a larger group of people who share common backgrounds (Jones, Baxter, & Khanduja, 2013). Such a study would adequately assess the general causative factors of illegal drug use and provide information on the individual reasons as well as the extent of drug abuse in a cohort.
To develop a conclusive survey, I would create a questionnaire design that answers the central questions in the study. The goals of the research should guide the design. The questions should be specific and non-biased to encourage the respondents to be genuine as drug abuse is a sensitive topic. The sample size is important in any survey. The sample size is dictated by the population size (Jones, Baxter, & Khanduja, 2013).

Small populations require small sample sizes. The reverse is true for larger cohorts. The sample size should be manageable. Also, one should take into account issues such as lost questionnaires and invalid answers when deciding on the sample size such that the number that remains is an accurate representation of the population. The survey can be carried out through interviews, online platforms, and electronic means.
