My original goal was a degree in PharmD when I came to Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA. Then I watched a documentary on “The Emperor of All Maladies, “in my third year at this university. This changed my life and degree path, as it inspired me to make a change. I wanted to be involved with this new technological area of medical science. This new science shows great promise in the eradication of cancer, as we know it today. This new research in experimental therapeutics truly fascinated me, and I was interested in expanding my knowledge base on this subject.
During the last year of the curriculum was an advanced hospital rotation in a hospital setting, and choosing to do a lab research rotation with Dr. Fadi Khasawneh as a supervisor. The research project was about novel antibodies and anticoagulation. I learned several lab techniques in conjunction with learning the science behind the physiology and pathophysiology and how it works in anticoagulation therapies. I must mention that I was the only student to do two rotations simultaneously and found both very satisfying opportunities. Now I am now vastly interested in following this exciting path of systematic investigation into the pathology of diseases.
I believe following this career path is exactly what I want to do with my education. It is fighting disease, but designing a new way to treat them, so they go into permanent remission. I know now that it will be my life’s work to assist in eradicating all disease from my human counterparts.
