Definition of human trafficking
Human trafficking is best defined as the process of acquiring a person by force, deceit or treachery for the sake of exploiting them by force for any form of exploitation. These include sexual exploitation, forced labor, physical abuse and any other kind of exploitation that violates the freedom of the person (UNODC, 2017).
Background of human trafficking
The current day or modern human trafficking is of diverse forms. A person may be held against his or her will as a domestic worker with no pay at all, or with very little pay, with no other means to find alternative employment. Victims
Impacts of human rights
Violation of human rights- The victims of trafficking suffer a diverse range of human rights violations ranging from forced labor and low payments to sexual exploitation for commercial gains to the perpetrators. Other forms of violations include being locked up involuntarily in bad conditions. These lead to psychological torture, which has many negative effects on the psychological health of the victims.
Economic implications of human trafficking- Human trafficking is very profitable to the perpetrators but have very negative financial implications for the victims. Most victims lack legal working histories hence can’t find well-paying jobs.

Sexual abuse may also lead to health complications that may lead to financial losses.
Causes of the prevalence of human trafficking
Internal policy issues- Most countries have laws that are formulated to cope with human rights violation, but disappointingly the laws have many flaws that make it easy for criminals or violators of human rights to go unpunished (Hernandez & Rudolph, 2015).
Flaws in international policies- Some international policies like the protection countries from external interferences blocks the fight against human trafficking. If one country identifies human trafficking in another, it cannot act to stop the vice as it would be seen as external meddling of another country’s issues.
Demand and supply- The demand for cheap labor is high and this fuels the business of human trafficking. The supply is also present mainly due to the presence of vulnerable people, especially poor people from poor countries.
Possible solutions and recommendations
Creation of joint Police-NGO task forces.- NGOs work directly with the victims of human trafficking hence they can provide vital information to the police.
Prosecution of trafficking cases in the courts- The prosecution and severe sentencing of traffickers would instil fear in other and bar them from carrying out this vice.
Ensuring there is supply chain transparency- Corporations like cocoa companies should ensure that no forced laborers were used in the production and supply of their raw materials. This would reduce the number of trafficked and forced laborers, and this has worked in Cote D’Ivoire and Ghana, hence it should be implemented globally.
Interventions by humanitarians- Humanitarian groups can help to solve the problem of human trafficking by intervening and advocating for global justice of the victims of human trafficking.
Reformulation of international policies.- The old ineffective policies made to deal with the menace of human trafficking have become ineffective due to the dynamic nature of the business of human trafficking. New policies matching the wit and technological advancements of the perpetrators of human traffickers should be put in place to combat this menace.
