Principles of Wealth and Power Concentration
The first five principles discussed by Chomsky in the book Requiem for the American Dream are reducing democracy, shaping ideology, redesigning the economy, shifting the burdens, and attacking solidarity. The principles were designed to keep the rich in their status quo while the poor languished in their poverty. Ideally, the principles let the wealthy dominate over the poor who lacked property to take responsibility for. Below is a brief summary of each principle:
Reducing Democracy
In this principle, the ideology was to reduce the power of the general populace and rest it on the opulent in the society. In the Madisonian statements, the reduction in democracy meant the division of the masses into fragments that could not unite to overthrow the Senate through democratic processes (Chomsky 16). The Senate was the wealthy class that protected their properties by ensuring power is vested on the property owners.
Shaping ideology
Chomsky cites the Powell Memorandum and the Trilateral Commission’s reports in supporting the ideology. The principle tends to beat the concentration and coordination of groups opposing the rule of the wealthy. The Trilateral Commission, capitalists from Europe Japan and North America, was meant to restore better order to control the media from what they termed as The Crisis of Democracy that opposed the political class. The congregation of students would be minimized by all means and any critic to the ruling class condemned just to shape the ideology (Chomsky 27).

Redesigning the Economy
Alan Greenspan cited the advantages of supporting “job insecurity” The idea here was to cut taxes on the rich by seeking cheap avenues to saving on production. By use of manufacturing consent production firms are made multinationals so as to evade stringent environmental and other production regulations (Chomsky 36). By doing this, the rich maintain their status quo while the citizens do not get employed locally. The national distributions of assets, assisted by business bodies aided acquiescent politicians to get elected leading to opposition from the masses.
Shifting the Burden
In the 1950s and 60s taxes were more with corporations, dividends and wealth now the move was in the direction of trying to keep taxes just on earnings and on expenditure with which everybody has to oblige excluding dividends, which are for the wealthy. Therefore, the burden shifted from the rich to the poor; a state referred to as plutonomy (Chomsky 51). In the plutonomic economy, growth is powered and consumed by the few rich.
Attacking Solidarity
To go after public education, the caring aspect of paying tax so that the children can go to school has to be driven out of people’s minds (Chomsky 50). In the 950s, college was free due to the G.I Bill and other taxes. The wealthy privatized institutions so as to avoid the Social Security fund that was unnecessary for them given that their accomplishments did not need the Act, so they stopped such public funding.
