Abstract
The paper focuses on a minority population in the United States that exhibits health disparity problem. The African American population is identified as a population that is affected by diabetes compared to other members of the American population. The paper reports that African Americans exhibit up to 80% chance of developing the disease compared to the non-Hispanic white population. The high prevalence of diabetes leads to different health complications that compel members of the African American population. Different organizations are involved in efforts aimed at assisting the African American community to cope with diabetes. The American Nurses Association, in partnership with other organizations, provides care to students affected by diabetes. Through this program, the ANA promotes positive health outcomes in the community. From a personal standing, advocating for the health of the African Americans promote equality and improve population health. In particular, the process will limit the costs of care an enhance the productivity of the African American population.

Minority Population and Healthcare Disparity Problem
One of the minority populations in the United States is the African Americans. African Americans tend to be affected more by type 2 diabetes compared to other members of the American populations. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health (2016) (Konstantinos, 2018), African Americans exhibit up to 80% chance of developing diabetes when compared with the non-Hispanic white population in the American society.

The American Diabetes Association (2014) of the adult African American population aged over 20, up to 13.2% have diagnosed diabetes. Further, the African Americans exhibit an escalated risk of developing complications as a result of diabetes (Chow, Foster, Gonzalez, & McIver, 2012). Through the high prevalence of diabetes among the African Americans, they exhibit high rates of morbidity and are compelled to incur additional costs in seeking care for diabetes-related complications. As such, the African Americans are affected both physically, socially, psychologically and economically with the diabetes menace.
Different organizations across the country are making contributory efforts towards assisting alleviate the problem of diabetes, especially American Nurses Association (ANA) has taken strategic measures to assist alleviate the problem of diabetes among the population. According to Virginia (2014), ANA, alongside other nursing entities have partnered to provide care for the students affected by the chronic condition. Such indicates that the ANA is committed to assisting in helping the affected persons cope with the condition.
From a personal viewpoint, advocating for the improvement of the health status of the African American population with a focus on diabetes is critical for the attainment of health equality in the country. In particular, the process will lead to improvement in the health outcomes for the African Americans and lead to significant reduction of cost of care and creating a healthy population across the United States.
