Laws that Sex Workers Want
Consensual exchange of sexual services for the transaction or gain of money and services is dominant in the contemporary society. Sex workers have experienced a series of victimization such as being termed as criminals due to the kind of self-employment they are pursuing. This essay explains the campaign for legal laws that sex workers want as explained by Activist Juno Mac, a feminist, sex worker, and an activist.
Juno Mac wants decriminalization, which involves complete removal of laws targeting the existing sex industry. She campaigns for commercial sex to be treated with equality like any other work while giving out a case of New Zealand people (Mac, 2018). Mac advocates for collective working together for safety by sex workers, the employers being accountable for their comfortable stay and have protected rights of choice.
Sex workers’ rights can allow the workers to choose to see the client at any time and for any reason. Notably, Juno gives the statistics of 96% of street workers feeling of insecurity of rights protection by the law (Mac, 2018). The author states how New Zealand’s decriminalization has made the place safer and reasonable legislation (Mac, 2018). She adds that New Zealand’s collaboration with the sex workers by the name ‘New Zealand prostitute collective,’ made the region safer by hearing from the sex workers themselves.
Ultimately, Juno Mac wants the creation of groups of sex workers and prostitutes to form a powerful global movement.
