Similarities between Life in Shameless and south side Chicago
Television shows and movies are used to communicate what happens in the society we live in.The website Experience Project 2016 has several experiences from people who hail from dysfunctional families. Jack Jacobson has also written a book about his dysfunctional family but it is yet to be published but gives a glimpse of his family. Jack’s father is a corrupt figure and is involved in a lot of scams in which he involves his family particularly Jack’s uncle Robert and his brother and sister. This is similar to Frank’s behavior. When Jack stands up to his father, his whole family turn against him. Jack’s mother leaves the family after being cheated on. The movie Shameless portrays as much by mirroring real life events in south side Chicago. The Gallagher siblings who only have their dad represent most modern families in which only one parent is present in the family. Despite his being alive, Frank is an absentee father whose life has been destroyed by alcohol. This notion resonates well in the modern south side Chicago in which one of the parents is enslaved by alcoholism.This absenteeism always leads the children especially the girls and the first borns to mature fast and take up the responsibility of keeping their family together. To earn money, Carl engages in the sale of drugs and narcotics which gives a clear image of the streets of south side Chicago. The incident where Frank and Monica use up the kid’s savings for the winter bills also adds to the parent’s roles in perpetuating the dysfunction. Overall, all the members of the Gallagher family have made decisions that would make one question their moral compass. These decisions are not about simple life issues, some of them have massive effects on the individual who undertakes them which in turn affects the family as well.
