In the modern world today they exist combs which depend on the individual hair length, type or texture. In the past combs represented a specific culture, but for now, it represents an object of purpose.
During the prehistoric times, combs were crafted from ivory and tortoise shells, some were made from the animal bones, and they were mostly used to depict individual status, but not specifically for maintaining hairstyle. Some of the earlier combs were in the form of a pick, and the symbols which were used as handles depicted some animals or some parts of animals, some even showed some religious and power connection.
In the modern times, there have been wooden, plastic and metallic combs. They have been crafted from recycled and new materials. Some of the pieces of stuff which are being used to craft combs recently are, titanium alloys, brass, exotic and acrylic wood, and plastics. Lately, there has been the development of electric hot combs, and also laser combs which are used for hair maintenance (Tuohy, 1995). They also represent individual social status since those who can afford these can only access them. This developments of combs till today, cannot make some people believe that the comb has had such a long history of events.
