Unit 7 Assignment-Argumentative Writing
The last decade has seen an important increase in the number of social media users. The growth has not only been in the population but also the amount of time a single individual spends on specific social media sites. The increased use means that the users spend hours after hours. The prolonged use of social media has adversely affected society’s communication skills. The opposing effect is felt for both verbal and non-oral skills. Therefore, the paper shall discuss how the use of social sites has adversely affected both oral and non-verbal communications in societies.
The prolonged use of social media has adversely affected nonverbal communication. The use of social media has reduced the number of face-to-face interactions that people have. The reduction, which in some cases can be total nonexistence, has affected the way people communicate non-verbally. Since nonverbal cues are an essential element of communication, people are so engrossed in social media sites to notice some of the non-verbal cues. Thus, there has been a communication failure in the sense that people can be in the same room and not notice each other body language.
On the other hand, use of social media has affected the manner in which people communicate verbally. The implementation of emoji has seen people prefer sending messages filled with emoji than rather verbally express their emotions. Furthermore, social media sites have a form of language that encourages colloquial phrases that cannot be used in formal writing.

Thus, frequent users have found themselves using this phrases in formal setting causing a communication breakdown. Therefore, not only has the use of social media affected spoken language but also created disregard of formal writing, which has influenced the efficacy of speech (Verere 131).
