In this theory, behaviors can be reinforced or altered by the use of positive and negative reward. An individual will tend to think of behavior, the reward, and the consequences. When a teacher awards the best performing students, this acts as a reinforcement to keep the student and other to continue improving in their class work. When a child is punished for not doing their chores at home, they will associate punishment with abandoned tasks. Such children may tend to be a perfectionist in their duties to avoid the punishment.
Walter grew up knowing that someone has to be self-reliant or be punished, they were forced to vend newspapers daily before and after school. There was a tyrant, and any opposition would spark a punishment. In his management, Walter used to award best-performing employee to motivate the whole team. He threatened to retrench and remain with best-performing employees, and this kept them working. Walter realized the mechanism hi father used was working for his company for most of the creative ideas came from his team.
The Cognitive Theory by Albert Ellis,
Ellis was a psychotherapist but developed a different explanation to the cognitive theory that explains how a person’s experiences can modify their personality. He suggests that we encounter experiences in our daily lives that that prompts us to think and act the way we do. The way we interpret the occurrences in our surrounds is based on beliefs convening the events around us and the role we play in those events.

In our context with Walt Disney, his early childhood surrounding were the environment for developing feelings towards art. Despite his father’s strict rules on no going out into the dark especially night dances, he would sneak at night to a nearby theater and entertain those who had visited for he believed he was creative. The environment made him believe that people should overcome obstacles that may hinder the achievement of their full potential.

His theory suggested that people reacted in correspondence to how they expect the world to be based on events from the past encounters. She suggested that if people from the surrounding if they show a friendly nature, one may turn out to be friendly. On the other hand, if they are unfriendly one may tend to avoid them and may participate in activities all by themselves. Since they have an experience of the unreliable environment, in the accomplishment of the tasks, they depend so much on their skills and abilities. Some of his biographers said that once he had decided the way to address a particular is, he had to stick to it. He had rigid ideas just like his father, and this was a result of nurturing from his environment.

Elias had a belief that Walter could become a good musician, for this reason; he forced him to learn some form of music. Walter had no passion in it, and it was a big challenge for him to endure. His father expected that by learning it, he would sometimes perform and earn some money. His father might have been abuse, but his action were based on the terrible economic time they were living in. His father would slap him during training for music, and this demoralized him. It was like a negative reward. Precisely the reward system he used in his company was learned from his father.

He suggested that leaders are not created but are born. The personality of a leader is inbuilt than man-made. He suggested that factors like upbringing, the environment, and education, help to improve the leadership character of a person but can never create a leader. If leaders are created, they don’t turn out to be as resourceful as those who are natural leaders. Walter Disney was a great business leader celebrated by America to date. His work inspired many. He was the last born in the family of four children but turned out be a model leader in what he believed in. He was never taken to art school, and dropped out from high school but turned out successful. He led his team in creating quality entertainment for the world. He used to mentor and motivate them, a leader is someone who joins the team in the creation of a company’s products than directing them. Walters’s upbringing did not change the kind of leader he should be but enhanced his leadership capacities.

This personality theory tends to explain and attach meaning to others behavior and our own. The argument establishes the cause of the event; one would be interested to know why someone is happy. The theory would try to find the basis of the perceived joy, for instance, is the person happy because his personality is not melancholic or because something that induced the joy had just happened. The theory combines the perceivers probe to reach the cause of the event under study. The theory suggests that we tend to look at internal attributes of others in the quest for identifying the causes of their various reactions and responses. Aspects of personality, naivety, and kindness are linked to one’s behavior. When we look into our behavior, we consider external attributes like the environment around us.
From the theory insight, we can explain the reason Walter created cartoon characters that displayed his childhood infancy. He experienced abuse childhood, life with his tyrant father was unbearable. The Christmas Carol is one of his animations that shows what he wanted but couldn’t find as a child. He tries to inspire other parents to give their children a better life with fun worth for a child. The workaholic nature of Walter could be attributed to the fact that he grew up knowing that failure was an option. Success comes along with power, his father taught him how to succeed the hard way, and that’s why he pushed his team member to work so hard to realize his plans. He was one rigid decision made; there was no reverse, and this could be inferred from his father’s nature.

This theory suggests that individuals learn by interacting with the environment. The theory explains that the environment shapes behavior. Considering internal states like emotions and thought to describe a person behavior or personality is not the best choice. Walter learned most his action that made up his character from the environment he grew up. He grew up in the environment that forced people to perform to their full potential. His father told him that he needed to focus on making money, and his father’s forceful actions like sending them to deliver newspapers daily before and after school was a definite impression. In his leadership and working ethics, he a believed in perfection and never tolerated those team members who underperformed. His reaction was due to how the environment natures him. To overcome his economic slavery, he believed that he had to work to his best to change the situation. The theory of moral development by Kohlberg Lawrence
Lawrence proposed that moral development is a continuous lifetime process. To find answers to his question, he wanted to find how children acquired the moral standards as they grew. His explanation was divided into three complementary levels of preconvention morality, conventional morality and post-conventional morality. In the preconvention period, the child tends to develop their morals based on expected punishment and reward. Later they learned to develop morals personal needs motivated the choices of morals, and the first level is done. At the second standard of the moral development, the child advances by developing morals that confirm with the society. They tend to act according to the expectation of the society around them. They act in a manner that the society will reward them according to their performance. Later in this level, moral development shift from individual needs considerations to the society as a whole. The last level, the individuals, starts to get their opinion and account for their difference in others thoughts, they tend to find a reason to attach to their ideas. But at the same time they observe the rule of law, later they learn to develop and express their internal principle even when it conflicts with the law.
Walter through his childhood, he passed through the three levels, as a child he would be obedient to his father vend newspapers, learned music forcefully and many other activities his father pushed him. Up in the level, he started to consider his needs and acted accordingly. He could sneak at night to a nearby theater and entertain people his natural way, he never wanted his father’s idea concerning music. He later as an adult turns to be what he believed in even when the world thought he was wrong. At the time, he said that he tried many times for his Walt Disney to be signed in Holy Wood, but he was denied the chance. He never gave up, later people thought he was suffering from depression from overworking, but he continued to work for he had dreams and ambitions.

This theory suggests that personalities of individuals are compost of five primary attributes. They include extraversion, neuroticism, openness, agreeableness, and diligence. The first attribute, extraversion, may be explained by considering an individual’s characteristics of sociability, talkativeness and high degrees of emotional expression. With this aspect, we can see Walter was a social and talkative person that was why he would go to theaters to entertain people at night. The second attribute, diligence, here a person shows a lot of logic in their conduct, they are goal oriented and tend to stick to their plans. This quality is typical of Walter; he was creative and industrious. He had plans and fixed to his goals, he was rigid to his arrangement. He was never bothered about those who left the company about his severe character but considered them traitors. His persistence to find his company registered was met with significant challenges, but he endured it all. The third is agreeableness; this focuses on individuals characteristic like kindness and able to show affection. Walter grew up in a background where love was conditional and to some level the environment natured him to be like that. In his story, not so much of affection towards other people is mentioned bout him. He would listen to his team ideas, but he was the final judge of what to be implemented.
The fourth attribute of personality is neuroticism, individuals with this aspect are characterized by anxiety, emotional instability, and melancholic moods. They tend to find the system they find themselves into as unreliable and ready to denounce it given a chance. Walter was never contented with his father’s leadership. He considered his father a tyrant and abuse; he developed a hate for his father who constantly punished him. He later followed his dreams and produced artwork that portrayed his childhood and how he hoped things should have been. Due to his overworking nature he would swing into a depression that raised his anxiety levels. The last attribute of personality is Openness, Individuals with this aspect are characterized by the ability to be imaginary, and wise in their dealings. Walter created Walt Disney, and the products he served were unique. He came from a humble background but realized his dreams. Before he died, he had outlined where Walt Disney should be and the direction to be followed by his company.
Theory of reasoned action by Fishbein and Ajzen
The theory suggests that an individual considers consequences of behavior before performing it. In this context, one’s intentions determine how they will behave. The attitudes of a person and the pressure that is exerted by the society modifies the plan that determines the performance of a given behavior.
Walters’s behavior and personality can be linked to the propositions of this theory. The society made him have intentions of success without considering a failure. His attitude towards work was so strict that his behavior as a workaholic turned to be episodes of depression and anxiety. His intention was to see Walt Disney as a global success, and his strict action achieved his goal even after he was dead.
The theory of striving for perfection by Alfred Adler.
He argues that there is a motivation or force that controls how Individuals behave. The motivation could the inner desire that burns within a person to motivate them to fulfill their full potential. By striving to achieve full potential, the individual moves closer to being perfect. Perfection is not a positive idea since it stains those performing a given behavior. Adler suggests that personalities are portrayed by considering the manner of approach in the quest to overcome the challenges before us.
Walter grew up alongside a perfectionist father. He knew that only perfect was the best, he never wanted mediocre children, and he would slap little Walter once he displayed some form of imperfection. He learned to strive to achieve his goals and that’s why he is seen overworking, but to him it’s just a normal behavior. He grew up in a society where men were expected to be strong and strive for Excellency. His father introduces him into a money making at an early age. This acts as a motivation that drive him in future while heading an entertainment company.
The theory of neurosis by Karen Horney
She proposed that neurosis was a way of making life worth living as a form of interpersonal control and surviving. The efforts to make life bearable have been mastered by some while other who she considers neurotic are suffering. Those who survive use the following skills. Compliance, where one joins the system to ensure they sustain their life in it the system could be the way of life of society. For instance, Walter had to perform according to his father’s instructions to avoid punishment and as means of survival with a tyrant and abusive father. The second one is aggression; here an individual chooses to resist and come up with their new ways of survival. Young Walter drops out of college to seek for a place in the army, but his age was not appropriate. He goes against what is expected of him to pursue what he thinks matters to him. Withdrawal is the third survival formula, and one chooses to move out of the system and joins another system with favorable terms for survival.
In conclusion, the theories explained above are used to show how actions and behavior of Walter during and after his childhood, portrays his personality.
