Abstract
This essay will explore the American Nurses Association (ANA), its policies and guidelines which it has developed to dictate the actions of nurses and procedures to be followed in healthcare organizations in their dissemination of health services. Nurses are faced with many challenges in their workplace and are at times put in a dilemma in their decision-making process when faced with difficult situations. This essay will examine the workplace procedures and guidelines developed by the ANA which guide their actions and behavior of nurses in their work and examines whether these rules and policies are echoed in the policies applied at my place of work. This essay will concentrate on the policies and procedures that touch the workplace with a specific emphasis on the following areas: both bloodborne and airborne diseases, consumer advocacy, and drug abuse, and environmental health, ethical issues in the nursing practice and social aspects in healthcare service sector.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is an organization which is responsible for setting up policies and procedures which advocate for promotion for optimization of healthcare services, alleviation of pain and prevention of injury and optimization of health services. ANA has provided guidelines and procedures which guide the actions of nurses at the workplace. The guidelines touch on the following areas; both bloodborne and airborne diseases, consumer advocacy, drug abuse, and environmental health, ethical issues in the nursing practice and social aspects in healthcare service sector (“American Nurses Association,” 2016).

The policies and procedures developed by ANA are a reflection of the guideline and procedures at my workplace a long-term care facility.
There is zero tolerance for bullying and any form of violence at my place of work; this is consistent with the ANA policies (“American Nurses Association,” 2016). Nurses are bound to be professional at all occasions even when provoked by patients and their families. The facility has provided a mechanism for nurses to seek support when threatened to curb violence in the process of consultation and service delivery. In my workplace, details about the patient’s sickness and other sensitive information are communicated by the doctor; a nurse does not have any authority to disclose such information to anyone without clearance from the physician. This procedure ensures that ethical issues that arise in this practice are addressed without compromising the privacy of the patient.
It is mandatory for every nurse to be registered, to be fully conversant with nursing practices, to understand social reasons behind some healthcare issues and to understand his/her rights and the rights of the patient (“American Nurses Association,” 2016). My organization has gone a mile further to offer education on the procedure of handling pharmaceutical waste to help conserve the environment and to avoid the spread of diseases as a result of poor waste management. The procedures and guidelines discussed above are the guiding principles that govern the process of offering healthcare to consumers and at the same time protect the nurses from other externalities that occur as they embark on their daily duties.
