The film 13th starts with the audio of Barrack Obama explaining how the United States is home to the highest number of prisoners in comparison to the population (DuVernay, 2016). Pictures of black people suffering in slavery are shown with accompanying voices explaining the nature of their suffering. Images of the civil war appear with explanations on how the war would lead to the birth of the nation.
Blacks face harassment through beating and torture while the white government also blames them for being members of a Ku Klux Klan (KKK). Blaming Africans about KKK activities is a way of ensuring that the police target and kill them. Members of the KKK turn into a revolutionary movement and start killing Negros through hanging. The white killing is a way of intimidating the blacks so that they can stop their liberation activities. KKK turns away from actual murder and starts discriminating Negros especially by barring them from voting (DuVernay, 2016). They did this since they knew that the blacks could voice their concerns through the ballot. The confrontation turns physical where black civil rights leaders are labeled as criminals and are after that imprisoned. The impoverished African Americans take the blame for the increased crime rate which is unfair. The government starts recognizing the rights movements and at the same time crime rates skyrocket. Many blacks are imprisoned reason being that they are caught using cocaine.

The arrest witnesses an influx of prisoners particularly during Reagan’s era.
A group of youngsters less than 18 years old labeled as super predators rise and are said to rape and murder people (DuVernay, 2016). The crime involving rape increases and some prisoners are released to pave the way for new ones during Clinton’s tenure. Clinton militarizes the police increasing the prisoners twice fold. A gunman called Zimmerman kills a black boy, but the court finds him not guilty leading to demos by the blacks. Lack of imprisonment of the white officer shows the clear bias the police have over the blacks and their actions and get support from other organs like courts. American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) becomes a significant player when passing bills in the legislature. Some firms in America make huge profits from the prisoners through government contracts instance secures Technologies, Corizon health and correctional corporation of America. The primary reason the high rate of prisoners is the profit that the contractors get. The chance of a black male going to jail is 1:3 while that of a white is 1:17. Large-scale riots rose up after the Ferguson more incidences where police responded with brutal force (DuVernay, 2016). The cops deliberately shot many black youths leading to massive riots. The movie ends with a song castigating the separation of children with parents through incarceration while showing pictures of happy black families.
Overall, the movie is a success having combined visuals, sounds and graphics. Use of topic themed music within the film further makes it interesting. Although it works well in using various forms of communication, it failed in relating ideas under discussion. There is no clear transition, for instance, to differentiate between slavery and human rights war. The audience, therefore, must be keen to know the point of change. The video is a masterpiece in explaining the genesis of crime and increase in prisoners in the US prisons. Through a careful analysis by ex-convicts, attorneys, and other interest groups, the main reason why there are many prisoners is that some corporations benefit from the prisoners through providing services. The groups will thus ensure prisons are always full as a way of safeguarding their profits.
