Date The 1968 Europe
The postwar period of between 1945 and 1968 constituted a district era in European history, it was a time that saw Europe divided into two parts, West and Eastern Europe. It was during this time that Europe had lost world hegemony and even retreated from the colonial possessions it previously boasted of. Europe had also retracted from two military alliances that were under the control of the Soviet Union and the US. This period was also marked by economic growth that was created by affluent consumer society in the Western front.
In the US and Western Europe, public majorities plus governments endorsed a proposal to combine the domestic reform agenda with the militant anti-communism. The liberal intellectuals have endeavored in a bid to preserve the endorsed consensus by way of contrasting the Western freedom with the totalitarianism of the Soviets.
The major international organizations that were known as the Congress for Freedom of Culture was seen to provide effective network meant for the dissemination of liberal ideas. Having emerged the victors in the Second World War, Britain, under the bale leadership of Clement, who was a member of the Labor party, created a powerful and comprehensive welfare government having an established National Health Service. This was top offer free Medicare to the British citizens. They also introduced other reforms that included free education, the inclusion of old-age pension programs, unemployment and sickness benefits and other insurance covers that were paid by all the employees.

The conservatives then came back to power and accepted the postwar reforms that were introduced by the Labor Party. Harold later came to power under Labor party and guided the country through the ideologies that were previously crafted by his predecessors in the previous era.
The social conditions of the Europeans after the war was rather grim. Conscription and rationing dragged on to later years as the country suffered what went down in history books as the world’s winter season. Even as time passed, wartime rationing seemed to have taken constant trend. The government had enacted regulations that banished the sale and consumption of ice cream and other rationed confections and chocolates. During this era, people grumbled. For the poor, rationing was a bit of something as it was much of a greater nutritive value than those at the postwar era.
The housewives at the time made a plan and organized for the opposition of austerity. The conservatives, by way of response, opened and saw their fortunes rebuilt through launching an attack on socialism, rationing, austerity and economic control.
The economic challenges that bedeviled the ear was the then treasury that was headed by Hugh Dalton and it had faced some urgent problems.
Why the shadows lasted longer
The shadows lasted longer in the Western part of Europe since all the issues that had crippled it had not been adequately addressed. The issues such as collaboration memories, the things that were done to the Jews and the parties responsible for the act plus the issue of remembrance of the extent to which individuals were fascinated with the idea of fascism.
In Eastern Europe, the process of integration took a rather slow note. It was simply a consequence of what had been imposed on a new regime that operated under communist ideologies. Interestingly, this regime imposed some stringent measures and rules for the people to remember and if possible, feel awful about. This war had been conflated with sufferings coming as a result of the postwar decades.
The politics, culture and society of the Western Europeans in the postwar times focused mainly on the culture of Cold War, intellectual life and liberalism. The USSR and the US had begun quarreling as soon as German threat disappeared while the hostility of Western and Eastern superpowers had since rescinded. The US and the British had secured military victories and had made victory over other countries their priority. This is the reason why the two superpower countries avoided the engagement on Stalin’s proposals and war claims and saw to it that there is an eventual peace in the two sides.
The World War II, as it stands, may have ended in 1945 as documented but the epilog of the conflicts ended centuries later. Western Europe was inching forwards as the eastern side endured the peace that came from the prison yard. This happened till the fall of communism way back in 1989. This signaled the opportunity to progress.
Almost half of the countries’ economy had received an immense devotion from soldiers, munitions, warplanes and bombs. The United States had also stopped their provision of loans in a rather unexpected way leaving serious monetary crises in the country. Harold Wilson was later to become the president through a narrow victory beating his opponent by a slim margin. The same personality had won the hearts of many and so himself reelected for a second term.
