College Tuition Should Be Free
Debate on college tuition has been there for some time now in America and Europe. Of late, the debate has picked pace with those for free college tuition gaining momentum in pushing home their opinion. Passionate opinions on both sides have been advanced. Most people, however, agree that affordable college should be offered. However, this is a question that demands more thought than just a yes or no answer. It deserves open-mindedness with balanced potential benefits, demerits and alternative solutions. The benefits of free college tuition, in my opinion, outweigh the cost of rolling out the program. When the cost of attending college is prohibitive, a lot of students are locked out of a fundamental right. After the entire world, today gives little chance for uneducated individuals to succeed. In this paper, I seek to support my opinion, which is, college tuition should be free.
Free college benefits the whole nation rather than just the student in question. The skills acquired in college are crucial in nation building with jobs today evolving to knowledge-based approach. The better-educated workforce is vital in filling skills gaps which hinder a nation from growing. Free college tuition will ensure that more youths in their prime can meet employer’s credentials. They will take good paying jobs, which will result in more money flowing into the economy. Previous research has indicated that people will spend more if they enjoy higher income jobs.

This will also ensure that they their personal development will not be derailed by debts. It is the obvious knowledge that when a nation’s citizens are struggling with debts, the nation’s development is derailed.
The issue of college tuition is not just purely economically inclined. It touches on morals, ethics and fundamental rights of ambitious around the globe. I am of the opinion that every youth should be afforded equal opportunity regardless of their social standing in the society. Falling to offer free college tuition means that a nation inhibits the equal poor opportunity to prosper in life. Collective intelligence and goodwill of a nation are eroded when education opportunities are a reserve of the ability in the society. This will only lead to a socially divided society.
I believe that college-level education is more of a right than a privilege. Denying a poor youth the right access education is not only wrong but offensive. Education, in my opinion, is the only weapon for poor youth. It is the only path that the poor can follow to realize their dreams. After all, they have no access to capital or parents who can ensure a smooth life or open up businesses for them. College level education today is a basic qualification just like high school education. Denying the poor that right means they will not be at a basic level platform with others. An expensive college tuition is a tool of discrimination that should be highly discouraged (Porter 74-100).
Offering loans to students seems like a good idea. It has been employed by many governments. This, in my opinion, is a short time solution to a deep-seated problem. Graduating students are faced with a rude reality of paying their loans that often attracts interests. The principle offered thus has a multiplier effect on annual interests. The graduate is forced to pay more than they were given. Research has suggested that student’s loan reduce a person’s chances of owning a home and accumulating wealth. It leads to a vicious cycle of struggle to survive as most money earned goes to paying debts.
College tuition fee inhibits a student’s potential. Highly qualified students in America have been known to avoid prestigious colleges where their potential would have been realized due to prohibitive cost. Students from low-income families and those from minority groups are most affected. This serves to increase the difference between the rich and the poor. The promise of equality in this scenario remains to be a dream.
Offering free college tuition will ensure that a student can concentrate on education. Tuition fees leave many students too worried to concentrate on their studies. They are forced to forego some classes to take part-time jobs. This time may also have in exploring other talents in sports, music or even acting. Their extra-curricular activities have been known to contribute to a student’s all-round growth.
Offering free college will ensure that people are happier in life. They will be able to contribute to their talents in college and after graduation. They will not be stuck in low wage jobs or debts. Happier people have been known to contribute to a happier nation. This will foster a sense of pride in ones’ nation. These individuals are likely to contribute more to a country’s development.
Free college tuition will improve college graduation rates. Fewer students will feel the need to drop out of college. Dropping out of college has implications. It means that the student wasted time that could have been utilized in other ways. They also had invested, and their money will go to waste. They are also more likely to attempt using inadequate knowledge gained to make a living most likely against the law.
Previous research has indicated high college dropout leads to increase in crime rates. These young dropouts may have lost their chance to graduate but their ambition to succeed in life is still intact. They are therefore more likely to result in crimes like drug peddling, cybercrimes, and even armed robberies. It is a well-known fact that an educated individual is most likely not to be content with their position in life. In this case, that position would be being jobless and looked down upon in the society.
Free college tuition will allow students to pursue courses they enjoy rather than the ones they can afford. Offering loans means students will be under pressure to pursue courses that will lead to landing a job to pay the debt. They will most likely burn out and in occasions quit because they derive little satisfaction with the work they do.
Those opposing free college tuition, argue that it may lead to more students and less money leading to faculty staff losing jobs. This is further from the truth because more students will mean more lecturers and staff being hired. There will only be an alternative way of raising funds. Some countries that have rolled out free college education since 2013 include Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Turkey, and Estonia. It is an intriguing fact that these countries don’t spend much on higher education than countries that do not offer free higher education. It is therefore not correct to argue that offering free tuition in college will be an added burden to the taxpayers. It is not impossible too as others have done it before and reaped benefits. It is also argued that offering free public college tuition will lead to the collapse of private colleges. This may not be true since not all people would enjoy being in public colleges. The high influx of college students may not lead to low quality of education. Whether to excel or fail at the college level is a personal choice because there is always a limit to what a lecturer has to offer. It is, therefore, the duty of the student to excel (Drachman, 91-100). Those against free college argue that younger generations won’t know how to handle money. Paying school fees, in my opinion, won’t be equal to gaining money handling skills.
