Explain their respective philosophies on education, as it relates to their respective historical context.
Both Alain Locke and W.E.B Dubois were African American scholars. W.E.B Dubois was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. On the other hand, Alain Locke was an African American professor, and he took the lead in promoting and interpreting how the African American culture influenced the American way of life. Alain Locke was born in 1886 while W.E, B Dubois was born in 1868. Both Alain and Dubois lived in a time when racism and discrimination against African Americans were high. Hence, they supported segregation of African American schools. According to Dubois, African Americans faced animosity from the whites. This would affect their education performance if they enrolled in the same schools. Blacks needed to be taught by fellow blacks, and they needed to be surrounded by black students since education requires a sympathetic feel between the teacher and the pupil (Bois, 328). Moreover, the surroundings and the relationship with other pupils affect the performance. Locke also supported segregation of African American schools to maintain parity. However, Locke argues that even though they are in separate schools, blacks are also entitled to the same educational facilities as whites. They should not be discriminated.

E.B Dubois influenced the institutionalization of education in the United States. In his argument, W.E.B Dubois claimed that integrated schools would increase racial prejudice. Moreover, Blacks needed to feel comfortable around black pupils and black teachers without fear of the animosity they faced from the whites. For instance, the Massachusetts Supreme Court upheld segregation through its ruling. The judge argued that integration would increase racial dissemination and highlighted that the separate schools in Boston had equal facilities.
Using the articles as a guide, explain your own views of education as it relates to present day education-either primary education or higher education (university, college, professional schools).
Currently, schools are not segregated based on races. They are segregated based on social classes and income levels. The rich attend private universities that have better facilities while the low-income earners attend public universities and other cheaper private universities. The rich end up getting a better educational experience than the low-income earners due to the better facilities. In the job market, employers prefer some universities due to their quality of education. The low-income earners end up suffering.
