Background of multiculturalism
The United States of America has for a long time taken in migrants with diverse cultural backgrounds. Multiculturalism is the acceptance of several ethnic cultures in a given setting. One of the significant principles of multiculturalism is that all cultures are equally good, important and worthy of respect. A country’s demographic structure constitutes of different people who originate from different countries, and have diverse religious backgrounds, values, languages, and traditions. In a multicultural nation, everyone is entitled to equal status in cities, schools, and neighborhoods. Multiculturalism began in the 1950’s. During that time, the civil rights movement was rampant in America. The campaign brought to light issues regarding inequality, discrimination, and oppression. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, Charles Wesley, William James, George Washington Carver took active roles in the promotion of multiculturalism in America. Multiculturalism has not yet been successful in America because some minorities face prejudice in the law enforcement, educational systems among others. Besides, most immigrants are not yet willing to give up their tradition to fit in the American culture (Historyplex, 2018).
Multicultural conflict as portrayed in the article
Multicultural conflict arises when different cultural beliefs and values of diverse ethnicities clash. There is always multicultural conflict in the United States of America.

The white people believe that all citizens in America have equal rights whereas the minorities believe that they still face prejudice in most institutions (Brown, 2017). One of the major tenets of multiculturalism especially in America is the acceptance of people from varying ethnicities and race, and with diverse religions and cultures. However, Trump, in one of his campaigning speeches promised to keep immigrants away from America to promote the country’s economy. The proponents and opponents of multiculturalism have different views regarding the decline of multiculturalism in America. The opponents believe that decline was a result of incompatibility between varying ethnicities. On the contrary, the proponents believe that decline was brought about by discrimination towards the minorities (McWilliams, 2018).
