Critical care unit is fundamental to any health facility. Critical care units provide services to patients who are facing life-threatening diseases or situations. In these facilities, the patients under the specialized care are those in which their vital body organs are at risk of failing. Various modern technologies including ventilators and Bipap machines are used in modern critical care unit facilities (Boroski et al., 2011).
In case of any failure of such mechanisms, or the conditions of the patients deteriorating, nurses must take immediate actions that are aimed at ensuring the safety of the life. Nurses must always be on standby. Life supporting machines are susceptible to breakage or damage. When such situations happen, it is the promptness and the decisions taken by the nurse that can save the life of the patient (Boroski et al., 2011).
Several alarm sound effects have been placed on critical care units in case of an emergency. Some machines in the critical care units are fitted with alarm devices. In case of an emerging issue, these machines have been automatically set to produce alarm sound that alerts the nurse on duty. When such happens, the nurses call the doctor to come and check on the progress of the patient. Other emergencies can be dealt with by the nurses by pressing the alarm machines in the room thus making the doctors aware of the crisis (Boroski et al.

, 2011).
In conclusion, it is the responsibility of the nurse to be always available in the critical care units. In so doing, they can still make appropriate decisions when faced with a matter of life and death. The patients in these rooms depend on them.
