Fear Appeals
The highlighted World War II pictures are classic exhibits of fear appeals. These pictures are graphic in nature and adopt the procedure of fear appeals. For instance, the first picture triggers the feelings of damage control. The person is drowning, but again he is seeking help. Hence, instead of triggering fear control, it initiates feelings of damage control. The person in the picture is calling for a solution, and the most likely solution is to help him out the water (war). Thirdly, we are all likely to fall victim to similar circumstances. Finally, the drowning fear does not necessarily entail helplessness as one can be rescued. Similarly, the second photo of the dead soldier also follows similar criteria, whereby it triggers feelings of damage control. The “Careless talk…got us there first” is a warning that people should be careful with what they say in order to prevent a similar occurrence. The solution to this is stopping the war, and however helpless it may seem the problem is solvable. Also, it is likely that war can occur anywhere.
Pity/guilt Appeal

The child in this picture holding onto her father’s photo triggers the guilt appeals to the government. The child seems unhappy and feels that something can be done to stop putting humans at the frontline of wars.

This portrait shows a smiling lady that is happy that she has managed to find a job in the midst of the tumultuous war times. She shows that while a lot of evil is going around, other pleasant opportunities have come up in the name of jobs for women.

This photo is a classic illustration of ironical humor. It shows Santa Claus who is wearing a military helmet to fit the happenings at the time. He subtly urges people to enjoy Christmas despite the gloom of war. The humor in this picture can be related to, hence, easily complied to by people.
