Limiting Speed Limits
There has been much debate in recent years over whether there should be speed limits for motorists driving on public roads and highways. Supporters of speed limits are of the opinion that the regulations help keep the roads safe and that the fines and money collected from speed-related violations help fund many government projects. On, the other hand, critics argue that speeds shouldn’t matter for any careful driver and that the government can only be abusing its powers by imposing such limits. This paper argues that speed limits are necessary for sanity and safety on the roads.
To start with the lack of speed limits leads to confusion and time wastage. It is important to note that even in highways or states that have no speed limits, you are not free to drive as fast as you may wish; you can only drive as fast as is safe for you and other motorists. This brings an element of confusion as to how safe is safe enough? A driver who has been doing a hundred miles an hour may be confident in his skills and see no problem in such speeds. For a more conservative police officer, such speeds may be too high and might endanger the lives of other motorists. In this case, therefore, different officers enforce different speeds which might lead to frequent tussles over the accepted limits and problems in sustaining speed ticket cases. This situation, in the long run, leads to time wastage and lost revenues.
Another problem arises from the different precaution and skill levels of drivers.

While one may feel okay with speeds of 90 miles per hour, other drivers might feel unsafe being around you due to their different skill levels. It might not be possible to control some unexpected circumstances on the road which therefore calls for moderation. Imagine a deer or child appearing unexpectedly on the adjacent lane and the driver is forced to swerve towards your lane to avoid disaster. If you were driving at such high speeds, it might be difficult to adjust to avoid hitting the vehicle. You, therefore, end up hitting the car and in the process harming its occupant as well as yourself. According to the NHTSA, speeding contributed to the death of 10,111 people in 2016 which accounted for around 27% of all fatalities during the year (NHTSA n.pag). The essence of moderate speeds can’t, therefore, be emphasized enough on public roads.
Lastly, it is important to dispute the argument that the government oversteps its mandate by putting in place speed limits. A motorist should note that he is not the only one who deserves to enjoy driving on the roads. The government must ensure that everyone using the roads feel safe and arrive safely and on time bearing in mind that they pay for the construction and maintenance of such roads through the taxes they give. Speed limits help make this possible by preventing unexpected accidents and maintaining effective traffic flows which minimize traffic snarl-ups.
In conclusion, speed limits should remain in place for the major aim of reducing accidents on our roads. It is only by driving at moderate speeds that collisions can be minimized on the roads. Speed limits also ensure that motorists do not drive at too low speeds which might lead to continuous traffic jams. Also, the money from speed tickets goes a long way in maintaining the roads and providing other services to the public.
