Biases in Reporting News
Bias in reporting news and public information meant for public consumption is a frequent occurrence, especially in the media fraternity. Considering the fact that a majority or a large percentage of the consumers of news and information are not able to make informed and knowledgeable decisions regarding issues concerning public strategy in the situation that there is distortion in their reliable source of information, it becomes crucial to citizens of different countries that there are fairness and no biases in the reporting of news. Media bias takes place when a media organization publishes or airs a story in a manner that is either partial or prejudiced. A survey conducted recently by Gallup Poll indicated that the mainstream of news readers believe that media houses and agencies tend to take a liberal stand concerning most contemporary matters.
The news item that is to be analyzed for bias concerns the recent remarks made by Republican presidential candidate Ronald Trump indicating that there is need for all Muslims to be banned from entering the United States. The newspapers that carried the piece and that are considered are Reuters based in the United States, Daily Monitor from Uganda in Africa, and the Guardian based in the United Kingdom in Europe.
The news sources agree on some issues. There is agreement that the presidential candidate is a front-runner, having led the Republican nominations list for the last couple of months.

Secondly, the newspaper agrees on the fact that the remarks were the most extreme issued by a running presidential candidate ever since the campaigns started to replace President Barack Obama as the next president of the United States. Lastly, the newspapers agree on the fact that the remarks triggered sharp and almost immediate response from other presidential candidates and caused outrage throughout the world.
However, Reuters is biased in their reporting by indicating that the presidential candidate has a habit of engaging in racially charged rhetoric. While it has been recognized by political players and interested parties that Donald Trump is the most outspoken of all the Republican presidential candidates, it is not accurate to point out that he frequently makes racial comments. Another interesting fact that comes out when Reuters based in the United States and United Kingdom’s The Guardian are compared is the accuracy of the information in their reporting. Corey Lewandowski, the individual, charged with managing Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, when through an email the parties that would be affected by the ban, replied that the ban would affect all persons who are Muslims. However, Reuters uses the word “Everyone” while The Guardian uses “everybody”, even though the same reply was sent to all the media agencies. This is bias in the sense that there is misreporting of crucial information. The news sources are similarly biased in the way of reporting by appearing to be leaning extensively on the side of the Muslims, who the presidential candidate spoke about, by highlighting the tribulations Muslims have to go through, such as racism and immigration.
In conclusion, it is very important for news sources to eliminate completely, or keep to a bare minimum any biases that may affect the way the news is understood and interpreted by those who consume it. Fair and unbiased reporting are even more important in the digital age where information can be assessed from virtually any place on the planet.
