Annotated Bibliography
Suicide has been a contentious issue over the years with some a vast majority of the population stating that ending your life should not be the solution to problems in life. Many other arguments for and against the practice exist. This paper documents an annotated bibliography of two reviews of the book A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Blackman which centers on a story of a character who went through several suicide attempts.
Alter, Alexandra. The Man Behind ‘A Man Called Ove,’ Sweden’s Latest Hit Novel. 28 October 2016. Website. 5 October 2018. <https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/29/books/a-man-called-ove-fredrik-backman-sweden-success.html>.
Alter describes the Blackman’s journey in attempting to publish his novel. After a series of rejections with some of the publishers stating that the book is excellent but cannot sell. The article highlights a summary of the book and the fact that it became a best seller a few months after its publication. The book not only gained popularity in Sweden but also in other countries around the world. The book has been translated into various languages due to its demand. The sellability of text that centers on suicide should not be as high as witnessed in the Blackman’s book. Even though the suicide attempts were unsuccessful, the texts plot seems to support suicide and suicidal thoughts.
Hart, Natalie. Dissecting A Man Called Ove. 25 February 2017. Website. 5 October 2018. <https://writerunboxed.

Natalie Hart expounds on styles that Blackman used for his novel. She mentions lack of an antagonist, first-person narrations, and masterful use of the pasts and presents tense. Although there isn’t an antagonist, Hart elaborates that what brings antagonism in the life is life itself and a person’s perceptions. Ove, the main character, fight in internal anger while nobody cares. Through this plot, as explained by Hart, I think Blackman reinforces suicidal thoughts to people. He seemingly supports the fact that people can retort to suicide to address their practical problem. Moreover, life is brought out as one of the leading causes of problems which means doing away with it (life) would help end the problems.
