Advocacy
Many definitions have emerged about advocacy with debates from different quarters on the best one to use. It is imperative to have a basis of reference in any discussion that deals with the term. It is against this background that this paper examines the following definitions.
Advocates defend or promote the rights of others. Human rights have been a victim of violations by authorities and other institutions in power hence the variety of legislation such as the universal declaration of human rights (Trigs 2014). Individuals and organizations have come out to ensure that these rights that are adhered to and protected.
System advocates change systems to meet the needs of others. They influence the system by changing the laws, practices, and strategies in ways that enable a group in the society to benefit. Trade union advocacy, for example, is always fighting to change government legislation and policies to help their members (Vaartio, Leino-Kilpi, Salantera & Souminen 2006).
An advocate empowers and promotes self- determination in others. Advocacy plays a central role in determining political and civil liberties. It gives citizens a voice in deciding which root they take politically as a nation. States secede currently as a product of advocacy. It has also been used as a means to peaceful co-existence between people of different cultures. Waring groups develop a sense of peace with each other as a result of advocacy. The International Council of Nurses is a good example of an organisation that has recognition throughout the World for championing the rights of nurses.

Advocates have been known to ensure respect, equality, and dignity of others. Women rights advocates are a good example as they advocate the fairness and respect of the dignity of women (Mayoux 2003). They ensure that human being is treated with dignity.
