“Why we procrastinate” as the student’s eye-opener in navigating learning and life challenges
Procrastination not only cause failure to students but it is also detrimental to an individual’s future since this habit can advance and become a full-blown crisis if not addressed early. It is a practice where one intentionally postpone a task which is supposed to be completed, to a later date. It can be seen as something simple during the early stages but it can grow to be a dangerous issue as it can be carried over to future, and this can impact a person’s daily life, work, or performance. Vik Nithy, in his TED talk speech “Why we procrastinate” offers numerous reasons why individuals postpone tasks. Similarly, it suggests ways students can employ to solve this issue. “Why we procrastinate” talk by Vik Nithy is a must-watch for all students since it will not only help them eliminate frustrations resulting from late-rushing, but it will also help them improve their performance which goes a long way to affect their future.
As per Nithy, individuals, in most circumstances postpone tasks due to numerous reasons and duties which are unattractive is an example of the cause. The talk is delivered in a manner that not only enables students to confront daily challenges but also entrepreneurs. The speaker’s success compounds this, yet he suffers from post-HSC. This triggers student’s thoughts to question themselves of success when they compare themselves to the speaker.

According to Nithy, procrastination is not an illness. It’s a choice to push tasks to a later date or time. For this to happen, one part of an individual wants to complete the work while the other wants to do other exciting tasks. As a result, an individual manages to convince himself/herself and what wins here is the side that convinces a person to do something interesting. “Oh it’s okay, I can do whatever I need to do tomorrow, I don’t need to do it now” (Nithy 1). An individual ends up doing tasks that he/she enjoys first while tedious tasks are attended to later.
The talk takes students one by one through various stages in an attempt to help them succeed. It encourages students to plan their goals and things that are needed to be done. This is done by splitting tasks into parts which makes tasks less overwhelming than it is seen. Apart from that, the talk suggests ways in which learners, as well as entrepreneurs, can employ to navigate through their daily tasks. These mechanisms comprise planning time, resources, the process itself, the distractions as well as failure. The speaker points out that the phrase “Don’t give up” encourages learners to accomplish something without giving up but sometimes it doesn’t work. If individuals procrastinate, things won’t get done. “If we procrastinate when we come to a roadblock, then I don’t think we’re ever going to get around to solving the problem. You have to learn to grit your teeth and get through it.” (Nithy 1). This not only encourages the learner to try despite the difficulty of the task but also inspires and give them hopes of success.
While the ideas expressed in this talk helps learners in many ways, it also encourages them to procrastinate. At some point in the speech, the speaker claims “We wait until we’re in the zone to be creative” (Nithy 1). When the time required to complete a task is about to come to an end, pressure forces an individual to think and be creative. This at times makes individuals perform exceptionally better than they could have done if they complete the task earlier. The author of Wait, Frank Partnoy is an advocate of procrastination. He encourages folks to embrace the practice as it is, in reality, an art which helps them to manage delay and can result in higher performance (Norman 1). He goes further and asserts that procrastinators can do more tasks since they put more effort on jobs that are more useful.
The supporters of procrastination claim that the practice is not something terrible. Based on how it is employed, the time obtained during procrastination could be utilized in doing something useful. As per them, this practice should not be viewed negatively. It helps improve performance by concentrating on more valuable tasks, making an informed choice through careful research during the delay time and make a strengthened, well-planned thoughts or things that could reduce errors and disappointments that could have occurred if the task was done without procrastination. Despite the strong points from the supporters and also those against procrastination, the practice is detrimental to student’s learning. Therefore the talk is vital for students as it will help them navigate through their studies by eliminating frustrations which come as a result of last-minute rush and this can help them improve their performance and improve their future. This is in line with Nithy’s concluding remarks that “if we get into the habit of planning, thinking about thinking and getting things done quickly, then the world becomes our oyster and our future will become a lot more prosperous” (Nithy 1).
