We all have ambitions and by having dreams we strive to achieve our goals. Whatever we desire gives us the motivation to make a difference in our lives or more so change the society for the better of every life. Dreams are valid and to live you should dream because that is the source of hope and success. The level of prosperity and victory will depend on what dream we have, real visions will always translate into success and an active living but with nightmares as your dreams, failure is inevitable. In “I Too” the poet sees a better tomorrow where there is no racism, and all people are given a chance to do whatever they wish in the society but in the “Dreams Deferred” there are consequences if you do not act to achieve your heart’s desires.
Hughes was writing about the American Segregation where racism was rampant, and Blacks were viewed as ordinary beings that should not be allowed to live or work as the Whites did. Blacks were to perform odd jobs that involved slavery and hard labor, and they were to view their masters with dignity. In “I Too” due to their complexion, Blacks could not share meals at the company table, and they were to eat in the kitchen. This separation did not prevent them from dreaming of a batter tomorrow where they could have meals on the same table as the company. Blacks had a dream to lead and do great things and no matter the separation they kept their thoughts validly. Blacks believed in the power and the glory it comes with and more so they wanted to be viewed as American citizens who would tackle any task or challenge and bring about positivity.

In “Dreams Deferred” the poet talks about the consequences of letting go your dreams. All actions have their costs, and we should all work to achieve our thoughts to make bright futures for ourselves and generations to come. If the Blacks continued to keep quiet, they would always be discriminated against and fail to achieve whatever they desired in the society. If you fail to follow your dreams you end up with a burden that is too heavy to support and this could cause more harm than before you had a dream. Blacks, therefore, had to dream where they envisioned a free nation and every person had equal rights no matter your race.
In both poems, the poet sees a better tomorrow for the Blacks only if they follow their dreams and speak out. In “I Too” imagery is used, an idea is viewed as food that is a source of strength and beauty and after eating the food no one will separate the Blacks because of color. In “Dreams Deferred” imagery is the primary rhetorical device; it shows how things get worse for failure to follow dreams.
In both poems, dreams are the driving force for human freedom and a free society where all people are equal and valued. To succeed every individual should not worry about their race or background but just by following your beliefs. Both poems are fantastic and the poet did an excellent job in creating awareness on the need to have ideas for a better tomorrow. Hughes played a great role in ensuring the Blacks have gained freedom of expression and living or working all over America by writing the two poems. The poet talks about having meals at the same table with the company and Obama has done that by being the first Black-American President in the history of the USA.
