Comparisons of the Attitude towards Women in the poems
In the two poems, the speaker describes women as a creatures who are just to be used by men for pleasure. It is why the speaker wants the woman he describes in the poem ”To His Coy Mistress” to have a love affair with her even though death awaits them that will cut their life shorter. The two poems have similarities as well as differences with regards to attitude towards women in the poems.
In both of the poems, the attitudes of the speakers towards women have one thing in common as witnessed in both cases. Similarly in the poem; “My last duchess” the speaker tries to command the woman in the poem to do as he says. He can, therefore, rule over her in all the ways so that he can satisfy his need by keeping the woman silent and doing away with his smile as he continues with his business of arranging for the marriage with another young lady who was only nine years old.
Similarly, in both poems, the speakers are displayed as the overall since they already know what will happen next shortly as displayed in the speaker knows that he can end the smile of the woman. The same applies to the poem “To His Copy Mistress” where the speaker knows that they will soon die, and the virginity of the woman will be interfered with by the worms in the grave. The similarity in the two poems, therefore, arises because the two speakers can predict the future. Consequently, both the two poems apply the use of figurative language.

In both cases, the speakers display that women are sources of happiness in the family. In the poem; “To His Coy Mistress,” the speaker says that he want to enjoy life with her before they die. On the same note the speaker in the poem “my last duchess” stops the smile of the lady so that she can keep it for himself and for him to enjoy the smile for himself and not for any other person.
Differences between the Two Poems
In the poem; “To His Coy Mistress,” the speaker is trying to entice the woman he is referring to so that he can win her heart in a way that can enable him to have sex with her. He also tries to convince the lady of the consequences she will face when she dies a virgin; the worms will enjoy her virginity, unlike he would have done when given the chance. While in the second poem “my last duchess” the speaker is not begging the woman for the happiness instead he commands her and stops her from smiling and keeping the smile for him. It, therefore, brings the first difference in the two poems.
In the poem; “To His Coy Mistress” the speaker is not jealous of the woman because he means good to the lady and that is why he tells the lady on what to come after death. The speaker tries to convince the lady in all ways possible so that he can have her by all means. While in the poem “my Last Duchess” the speaker does not want other people to enjoy the smile of the woman but only for him and that is why he stopped her from smiling anymore.
