The Film Lady Macbeth
Directed by William Oldroyd and produced by Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly in 2016, the film Lady Macbeth stands out among the leading productions portraying societal patriarchy and male chauvinism. Based on the story Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District by Nikolai Leskov, it narrates the ordeal of Katherine Lester who forcefully gets married to a wealthy Alexander Lester at a young age. Then, the man is way older than her, the marriage loveless, and extreme limits of oppression that see her restricted from moving and her rights violated prevail (Oldroyd 2016). However, Lady Macbeth deviates from the traditional trend where oppressed female characters flee their oppressors. Instead, the character delivers revenge and achieves the goal of retaliating and punishing her oppressors excruciatingly.
The characterization of this film is remarkably effective with all the characters perfectly matching their roles. The most outstanding and all rounded one of them is Katherine Lester. At the beginning of the film, the character looks weak and helpless. She easily gets compelled into a marriage she does not like and has to mother the children of an extremely oppressive man. In the process, she loses all the people she loves completely. In the turn of events, Katherine begins an affair with a worker of her husband, Sebastian, and kills the father-in-law, husband, and step-son in some of the most inhuman ways (Oldroyd 2016). Ultimately, she turns the blame to Sebastian who is taken into police custody alongside Katherine’s housemaid Anna.

The main character in this film presents a package of regular emotional shifts from a helpless oppressed to a cold-hearted avenger. She develops progressively and delivers her character in suspense packed formula that will keep everyone glued to the screen. The most excellent and attractive feature of the film is the witnessing of an oppressor being oppressed, making the film a must watch.
