Countering Terrorism Through a Non-military Intervention

Many people tend to buy the idea that terrorism can only be fought through military actions; however, this is not the case since other alternatives exist. Countries like the united states, Britain and Israel have been on the forefront in the fight against terrorism but most of the time resort to military intervention. Coercive military counterterrorism is only successful when together with the other soft methods. This paper is going to highlight the other counter-terrorism activities apart from military actions that can be used to fight the vice.
A friendly response may be used. It involves the use of reforms that address the complaints of the terrorist without dealing with them directly, for instance applying criminal justice (Frey, 2018). It can also include accommodating the demands of the terrorists. However, this has faced a challenge from the U.S policy that they do not negotiate with terrorist. An example of reform is that positive incentives can be offered to terrorists to give up on their missions. This is an effective way in motivating the potential terrorist not to engage in terrorism since they will find benefits that only exist to reformist. The former terrorists can be given a role in participating in peaceful interventions where they earn, thereby raising the opportunity costs. The advantage of this strategy would be that: one would have a better chance of over depending on terrorism, the groups would be disoriented due to conflicts, and the interaction of terrorist with other people would be positive.

Strategies used here include: Reintegrating terrorists, welcoming regreting members and offering valued opportunities.
The second activity would be diffusing media attention. Terrorists depend on the media to spread fear to the public (Frey, 2018). The relationship between the media and terrorist is symbiotic in that; terrorist wants to propagate their political demands to the public while the media, on the other hand, want to make stories that are attractive to viewers. Therefore, research has indicated that media censorship, statutory laws and voluntary self-restraint of the media would help in curbing terrorism.
Finally, a proactive response can be used to deal with possible future terrorism event. Newly emerging political conflicts that may later result in terrorism may be identified and solved at an early stage.
