A security officer is someone employed by either a public or a private security firm, and they are allowed to carry guns. Influence by the private security companies and large businesses have hindered chances of the security officers to get sufficient training because they have failed to meet the country’s training requirements. Training of the security guards varies from one state to another; in some states, the security officers complete their training while working, other guards are compelled to register to a training academy, and upon their completion, they can be taken for further training when hired and some spend some time watching videos or are taken out for a shooting range (Walter, 2018). A bill passed in 2004 required all states to do a federal bureau of investigation background check, but none did it because more training and background check would be costly for the security guard employer. Because of the competition among other security companies and the narrow profit margins, many companies oppose any regulation imposed on them because of the cost.
According to the article, Manicurists appear to require more training in their job description compared to armed security officers. Manicurists were reported to receive training totaling about 400 hours. On the other hand, the total number of training hours received by security officers totaled 60 hours (Walter, 2018). This has raised potentially contentious issues concerning whether training for security officers is adequate since the total hours of training seems to be surpassed by those done by manicurists.

The author notes that the lobbying that is rampant in most states has led to the requiring of less training hours for the security officers.
