The mentioned friend has a problem with missing classes and not wanting to explain why he skips lessons and comes late to work. The underlying problem that results in jumping off classes and getting late to work is as a consequence of alleged heavy drinking. Given the previous history of the friend, he used to drink socially, attend all classes, and come to work earlier; something must be underlying the heavy drinking. The problem that needs attention is to understand the cause of heavy drinking. However, untamed alcoholism is also a problem, but it does not attract immediate attention as it only appears to be a symptom of something else.
Social drinking is acceptable, but excessive alcohol derails one from the compass of life. People do not just decide to drink silly without any reason. There must have existed something that triggered heavy drinking; in finding a solution, the cause must get identified. Sometimes drinking alcohol is just an effect of some underlying problem. Treating symptoms does not equal disease curing. It is proper to first determine the role of alcohol in the life of the friend, is it the problem or a consequence of a problem (Cottrell, 2017).
Given the hostility projected by the friend, the solution to his troubles cannot come from him but those close to him. Since actions are limited in such a situation, it would be proper to remind the friend of what he is missing out at school and work.

However much he may have detached himself from work and studies, there is still some attachment. In some other way, outlining the consequences of getting late to school and missing out on classes may help in generating a solution; only after the warnings get to him (Cottrell, 2017). If the problem is known, it would be prudent to direct all energies at solving the problem, but in this case, the problem is not in the knowledge of the friends. The fear of the unknown is used to impart proper behavior to the friend.
Alternatively, by impacting fear on the ramifications of missing classes and coming late to work, the friend would have to check on the amounts of alcohol consumed. One should engage in a continuous struggle of impacting fear, and continued advice on the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption. It is only through such steps that a remedy to drinking can arise.
Since the friend has not locked friends out of his life, they can help drive the message home. However, it is possible that repulses may emerge, and in that case, the friend may have to suffer the brunt of his decisions. In trying to make the friend understand the dangers of excessive drinking pointing out at the reasons that prompted him to start school and why he secured a job will be a necessity. Identifying what ails a person is difficult until such a person appreciates that they have a problem; all the steps would aim at making the friend desire a solution to his predicament.
The situation one finds himself with a friend of such nature only leaves one avenue open, and that is working from the known towards the unknown. It is not open to debate that excessive alcohol drinking exists, but the reasons are not known, when he stops drinking he may be in a position to disclose what ails him, or maybe the problem may get exposed. In the scenario presented the problem is excessive alcohol consumption. Solving the problem requires the friend to listen to his friends who outline the dangers associated with heavy drinking would bring him to a level where he shares what troubles him (Cottrell, 2017).
It is only through the process outlined that a solution to the problem can come to being. The person in question is a friend, and there is nothing more than getting to talk to him that can get done on him. Whatever means one adopts, there must be talking and a lot of advising and scaring when needed to help the friend stop excessive alcohol consumption.
