The modern world is profoundly changing, rural, urban migration and easy cross-border migration has led to the settlement of people with diverse cultures at a familiar place. This has resulted in opportunities and challenges for the nurses hence requiring the healthcare policymakers to establish systems that will ensure nurses are culturally competent to deal with the patients. Expertise is essential in dealing with any kind of disorder as far as healthcare is concern. Thus cultural competence is vital because it will give the nurses the ability and confidence to offer health services to their daily clients efficiently and effectively.
Cultural awareness is a suitable tool that helps one to learn and function well in a new international environment. The artistic realization has helped me to assess my progress in nursing service delivery. Cultural awareness has also enabled me to mistakes and pitfalls every time I cross borders or deal with individuals who have different cultures from mine. Cultural awareness gave me the ability to deliver sufficient health care attention that meets cultural, behavioral and linguistic needs of those who are sick. My cultural awareness has enabled me to provide quality health care; I have also been able positively to contribute towards the elimination of racism and ethnicity in the health sector.
A few months ago I was volunteering in a specific organization that worked around the world, my experience and service delivery was brilliant.

The language was one of the factors that could have hindered my nursing services but did not because am conversant with more than three international languages. In most cases, the cultural diversity will be manifested through the language. My level of cultural awareness has improved over the recent years as result of exposure to various working environments. In all those workstations I worked people who are different with me in relation culture, ethnic group, language, and believes.
As long as am practicing nursing, I will always be an advocate for the patients under my care. I believe that there is a great need for advocacy in the medical sector, but this topic is debatable. The benefits of patient advocacy are that the patient requires support from nurses who ensure they get treatment and their needs and interests are attended. For example in a recent scenario when conjoined twins were separated by court order after the parents declined the request by doctors. The same happens in the mental health departments when patients are not ready to take any medication on the basis that they are not sick, but the doctors or nurses will not agree that.
From a personal experience, in a Mental Health Center where I was attached for one year, I learnt a lot. Its then I came to this conclusion that nurses are better positioned to play the role of mentally ill patient advocate as well as any other disorder or sickness. It’s true that nurses have the medical education, being professionals they have an equal chance in the treatment team. Nurses are the caregivers to the patient and, therefore, spend the most time with the patients. Therefore, it is clear that nurses stand a better position to know and understand the needs and aspirations of patients depending with their level of interactions. Despite all that the nurses face real challenges in advocating for the hospitalized patients as a result of a conflict of interest.
