Databases in Action
Database refers to the collection of related files or entities that have been stored in a particular approach for problem-solving or future use. In the healthcare industry, medical databases serve as a critical aspect as they have been applied to improving the quality of healthcare within particular delivery systems (Shneiderman, Plaisant and Hesse, 2013). The databases have brought about more comprehensive and accurate data that institutions can rely upon to ensure better healthcare outcomes. Through the use of Database Management Systems (DBMS), faster and more secure access to data is enhanced. Databases have been applied distinctively in the healthcare industry.
Considering there were no databases in the healthcare industry, healthcare consumers would be exposed to increased risks of human errors and other challenges such as time wastage due to increased manual work. Moreover, in the absence of databases, the old systems would exist yet they are less immediate and convenient as compared to the modern systems. They include; filing cabinets, file folders, and paper documents. In hospitals, there exist both online and offline databases using such technologies as Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Electronic medical records (EMR). In such systems, the main information files contained include records regarding government programmers and health insurance, records on allergies and disabilities, reports on medical procedures and operations, medication prescribed, laboratory tests results, information regarding family medical history and lifestyle, medical history and patients’ personal information.
