Description Essay
Name
Institution

Caffé Reggio offers a great experience to customers. One gets welcomed with an exciting smell of coffee that is blended with that of baked cakes. The smell freely circulates in the café due to the fact that the coffee bar is located just at the left side of the café. The first thing that meets the eye of the customer is the beautifully arranged bars of chocolate and cakes in a sort of glass cabinet at the entrance. The variety of cake is itself worth noting. One gets to salivate just at the site of the freshly baked exotic cakes sold in this restaurant. The attendants seek to enhance this experience. Vintage portraits of art scattered in the walls allows people to revisit their past in seeking recollection with history. The chronology of the events depicted in the pieces of art offer to arouse nostalgic feelings in any individual with a thing for artwork.
Despite offering exciting customer experience, Caffé Reggio fails to capture the selected needs of the diverse nature of customers. Located at the heart of New York City, it is expected that the clients are derived from diverse social and linguistic backgrounds (Caffe Reggio, 2015). The language used in this café is mostly English. The menus in the coffee shop fail to use other languages something that makes it difficult for a foreigner to seek the services. Further, due to the popularity of this joint, the place is often crowded making it difficult to get a spot and enjoy coffee. Caffé Reggio does not over great variety in the foods served due to the fact that it has sought to specialize on coffee and its accompaniments.

Analysis
Various strategies have been used in the descriptive writing above;
Stating the intention directly
In the first piece, I have sought to positively explore the experience of Caffé Reggio with first opening the statement with the phrase ‘Caffé Reggio offers a great experience to customers.’ Similarly, the contrasting paragraph about the same place uses the same strategy of stating the intention directly by stating that ‘Caffé Reggio fails to capture the selected needs of the diverse nature of customers.’
Selecting details to support claims
The descriptive essays above carefully filter details and select them in a bid to convince the reader. The first essay that argues positively has explored details about the kind of art offered in the café plus the excellent nature of the coffee that is served. For instance, it explores that ‘Vintage portraits of art scattered in the walls allows people to revisit their past in seeking recollection with history’. This enhances the effect of creating the picture in the mind of the reader enabling them to develop a bias for the café. Contrary, the second paragraph seeks to discourage the reader from desiring the services of Caffé Reggio. The essays importantly highlight the fact that the café has no place for linguistic diversity and chooses to majorly describe this fact.
Using sentences structured to emphasize and deemphasize the idea
The bodies of the two essays use structured sentences in a bid to either emphasize or deemphasize the idea about the café (Custom guide to writing, 2005, p. 74). The first paragraph goes into detail in attempting to highlight the idea that the coffee shop is desirable. This has been done using selected choice of words in the body of the paragraph to enhance the convincing nature of the text. Part of the paragraph explains that, ‘The variety of cake is itself worth noting. One gets to salivate just at the site of the freshly baked exotic cakes sold in this restaurant’. On the other hand, the second paragraph has majorly sought to deemphasize the idea about Caffé Reggio being the café of choice. Some of the sentences in the last parts of the paragraph have sought to make this vivid.
The most important thing I have learned as a writer from this exercise.
This exercise enables one gain skills of descriptive writing. Writing such pieces enables one to be analytical and explorative in their work which makes them see beyond the obvious. Arguably, the choice of words in any kind of writing can influence the impression of any reader. Descriptive writing seeks to exploit the choice of words in trying to convince the reader about any event or topic. I have learnt various aspects and principles of descriptive writing important among them, the analytical concept of it. Descriptive writing is an art that makes the learner explore many possible scenarios which have a major impact on their style of writing. I have learnt that the convincing power of an essay will rely not only on the point emphasized, but many other things such as the way one chooses to structure their sentences and importantly the choice of words one uses. Further, I have appreciated that there is a thin line between analytical and descriptive essays since descriptive essays need sort of vast analysis about the topic on is writing about.
